Edirol sell Sonar 3 Studio for £269,

Digital Village sell it for £179,

that tells you something about the margins Edirol likes to work with......

Post

I think you are missing the point. Manufacturers and distributors always charge more for new products when bought directly from them. Cake has SONAR on their site for 719 for new users.

How would DV or Guitar Center feel if Edirol and Cakewalk were competing with them for business. Last time I checked DV has Kinteic for 79 and reg users can buy Kinetic from Edirol direct for 69. Et Cetera has it for 99.

So maybe Edirol is not so horrible?

Post

I don't think I am missing the point - Kinetic was available at a special price on Cakewalk website for the equivalent of £40 which is cheaper than £69. Edirol just do the usual $=£ conversion which is a joke. Also, another major gripe is that you cannot take advantage of any special offers on the cakewalk site if you are from Europe, which again, to me is just crap.

Post

Well they told me that you cannot access direct offers because the EU requires VAT to be collected. So since they do not have an office in Europe...

and that's a lot of crap as well. They gave me that line months ago. How come one man developers, based in the US can cope with charging EU vat and Cakewalk can't . Most companies outsource payment handling anyway. Look at cakewalks - it's a yahoo shop - and yahoo handle the vat for other sites. you don't need an office in europe to charge vat

Post

Exactly!

Post

It took me three months to upgrade from Gigasampler to Gigastudio last year - and that was WITH the(friendly) help of the European CEO !

I frankly don't spend much on commercial software these days because this was not my only bad experience with upgrading. I totally sympathise with everyone on this thread.

Post

Well thank the EU for this, it's not Cakewalk's fault. I mean is it Cakewalk's fault we have to pay VAT?

Post

Nobody is blaming Cakewalk for VAT but their excuse that they cannot allow european customers to buy software from their online shop is feeble.

Post

Actually it is the law, I checked with s solicitor friend of mine and selling software from outside of the EU into the EU requires VAt to be collected and paid to each country.

Wow too much business not enough music!

Post

Live 4 and EnergyXT will give me what I need. I have Sonar 3 Producer and I dont see me getting Sonar 4. The upgrade price is likely to be far more than what Ableton are asking for.

If Cakewalk cant take Europe seriously then why should we take them seriuosly?

floyd wrote:Wow, reading all this is horrifying. Terrible business decisions. I think the only thing you can do is just not buy Cakewalk products if they are priced so unfairly, with poor support. Really, Sonar 3PE is highly overpriced even in North America...
Are you joking? How is it overpriced? And overpriced compared to what?

my post was just too pissy sounding for me to leave it here so.......BOOM!!!!! ;-)

So, since Edirol don't seem to be offering the Sonitus effects which are available to buy and download now on Cakewalks site (if you happen to be in the US or one of the few other countries from which they'll allow you to buy direct), I thought I might just upgrade from Studio to Producer, but check this....

On Cakewalks site you can buy the upgrade for $99 and they will throw in free shipping and a copy of Sonar 3 Power. Now to be fair, let's suppose that Cakewalk would actually let UK customers order this on their website and add $20 for shipping to UK and 25% to cover VAT and import duty - that brings it up to almost $150 or £83

From Edirol UK the upgrade costs £156 including shipping, that's about $280

So, $150 If Cakewalk would let you order direct
or, $280 for the privilege of buying from Edirol UK

load of effing bollocks :x

They've got a forum (where the Cakewalk execs participate quite frequently). Why not go there and let them know how you feel?
