Mired in the quagmire of VST's, -late at night for me, I kinda' ground to a halt both technically and artistically (Though that word is a huge stretch, here).
"Tears of a Clown" came up on my playlist... (Smokey's)

Damn, it is so catchy even today. almost a perfect 3 min. long and full of hooks. In my current state I was wondering if it might be the most perfect pop song ever, but I was afraid to start a "most-perfect pop song list" thread.

Gave me something to appreciate and learn from. :)

Let this be known to man:

THE MOST PERFECT SONG EVER IS SWAN DIVE'S 'Rome Will Fall'

:D :D :D

Well, perfect pop's one of my fields of research. :D :D I'd say that Saint Etienne are the masters of this stuff. [especially their earlier stuff, nowadays they are a bit more 'electronic' and 'experimental' - still great though :D ]. Just listen to 'Jack Lemmon', 'Hobart Paving', 'Who Do You Think You Are' and MANY more.

Also, there's a band I've been promoting a lot on KvR called Swan Dive that write the perfect-est pop I've ever heard. :D If you get their albums 'Circle', 'June' and 'Swan Dive' you'll fall in love. [see the beginning of this thread for their most fantastic track's title :D ]

There's another band called Asbhy on Marina Records that have a fantastic album called 'Power Ballads'. And since Marina [ http://www.marina.com ] is the modern perfect pop label, you may want to check The Aluminum Group out while you're there.

We can never forget Prefab Sprout too :D

And isn't Buddy Holly's 'Everyday' still fantastic??

Here is a list of my concept of inspirational "pop" songs (ah! :D )- any special order:

Phantasmagoria In Two-Tim Buckley (Folk, alright  )
Happy When It Rains-The Jesus & Mary Chain (New Wave is a kind of pop, right? :P )
Nothing Else Matters-Mettalica (A heavy rock ballad  )
Dead Flowers-Rolling Stones (I know, more Country & Western than anything else  )
Hello, Goodbye-Beatles (Real pop :) )
La Bamba-Richie Valens (just pop, nothing else)
Country Home-Neil Young (er,...? :? )
The Change-Nina Hagen (THIS IS POP!:D)
Rockaway Beach-Ramones (Punk rockabily does count too, right? )
Cidade Fantasma-Radio Macau (Pop! In Portuguese :D )
Je T'aime, Moi Non Plus-Jane Birkin+Serge Gainsbourg (couldn't miss the list 8))

Not comprehensive, by no means
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.
