grow more acute by asking:

What does the label "real musician" stand for from the
point of view of the normal man or woman on the street?

For some people on the street the label "real musician" is only given
to somebody who did study music at university.

Vice versa a composer, a loop-tinkerer, a PC home constructor, a
recording engineer or an audio engineer - these are not labelled
"real musicians". That is because everyman cannot see these people
anywhere. They're never on TV, they're not in the concert hall or in
the stadium - and so for everyman they are just not existent.

so if until you're a virtuoso and it must be an acoustic traditional instrument according to the people on the street? So where do synths, electric guitars and basses as well as other electric instruments fit in? And when do you know you are a virtuoso?

Once I was inflicting my music on my friend. This track came to a passage of solo piano in a more or less virtuosic manner, or at least it sounded like 'significance', through the sort of harmonic vocabulary I used. She remarks: 'Now that is a real musician.' Even as her tastes range from pop R&B to 'House music', in fact at one time fancied herself as a DJ. So she isn't exactly the kind of "elitist" people here detest, but recognizes that distinction somehow. Hmmm...

Why would a 'PC constructor' be labeled a musician anyway? Are engineers now musicians magically or through some sort of technological proximity, vis a vis KVR? I don't know your everyman, but I think my friend's idea of that pianist is wrapped up with composer, even as she didn't seem to profess terrific interest in it before. I don't think the question grew more acute, if anything more diffuse through your 'everyman'.

You just touched on why people drew the line in the sand somewhere along the line, hence the 'joke' of the OP & other posts with that whipping boy.

And who writes these dictionaries? There we get four ways to state one definition. I don't think the meaning of virtuoso is unclear to very many of us here. I think there is an insecurity about it so people make jokes, to have any notion of 'real musician' ought be a shameful thing.
