MDrummer Random Loops

When Song is disabled; then in Rhythm Editor, enabling Automatic breaks will result in random loops even when random loops is not ticked.
Bug? Or any reason for this?

I think thats how its supposed to work. You can jam with the mdrummer in the rhythm editor and he will throw in short breaks every abr, and long breaks after every coupla bars . It actually does not work in the song arranger at all.
I think the settings that you asked about in the other thread also relate to these kinda breaks.
So automatic breaks is for rhythm editor only. I only wish I could sync it to the the host DAW track without having to use the song arranger.

muslimpunk: just to clarify, the random loops setting refers to the loops (if more than one) in the index box...what you describe (loopbox changing) is covered by the sequencer mode then automatic breaks settings.... The anomaly I ask about is that in Rhythm edit, enabling/disabling random loops is effective when sequencer mode is off or when sequencer mode is on, but when automatic breaks is on, random loops are chosen from your index box regardless. Seems like a bug to me because why would I not still want the option in automatic breaks mode?
By the way, yes, sequencer mode and automatic breaks are just for Rhythm edit (Song mode overrides all that), but the random loops setting (on or off) sensibly works for song mode/ midi command method as well..that's why in my question I specified song mode off so as to narrow it down.

You can actually do this (in Reaper at least).muslimpunk wrote:.. I only wish I could sync it to the the host DAW track without having to use the song arranger.
Press play in your DAW.
While playing (in DAW), press play in Rhythm edit..MD will update it's tempo.

Aaaah gotcha ! So if song mode is off, and you play a loop from the rhythm editor, the break should be the same each time IF the random loops option is unchecked.goldglob wrote:muslimpunk: just to clarify, the random loops setting refers to the loops (if more than one) in the index box...what you describe (loopbox changing) is covered by the sequencer mode then automatic breaks settings.... But then which one short break and one long break should it keep playing ? The first ones it finds?

Thanks for that info ! very useful.goldglob wrote:You can actually do this (in Reaper at least).muslimpunk wrote:.. I only wish I could sync it to the the host DAW track without having to use the song arranger.

Can I sync the loop to start playing when I press play in Reaper ?
Basically i wanna jam with my guitar while the rhythm editor plays along with the automatic breaks. I will be recroding the midi out put of mdrummer 5 , for later use.
I want it to perfectly in sync with Reaper's start / tempo & grid.

That depends on the level setting. The keyboard keys (loopboxes) relate to different 'levels'. So yeah, sequencer mode just means that if you play a break it will jump back to beats; auto breaks just means that MD will play beat, then break, then back to beat etc automatically (according to the break length/interval settings); but it won't choose different loopboxes unless you manually change the level...but then in Song (or midi commands method) you can define the level you want for each section.muslimpunk wrote:

This is possible but a bit hit and miss because I believe MD is not really designed for this.muslimpunk wrote:

First set up the tempo sync as described previously. Once set up it stays that way..you can stop/start whenever. Place your cursor in Reaper a bar before your jam starts, press play in Reaper then promptly press intro in MD. Intro will play for the rest of that lead in bar then beat should start on the bar line. Experiment with cursor position. Try the 'perfect sync' setting in MD/Rhythm edit/Additional/Advanced. It should all sync up, but actually, all this is much easier (by design) with Song Mode (or Midi command method). Think of Song mode as just the icing on the cake of what you have set up in Rhythm edit anyway. And with Song mode, you just use 'play' in Reaper; MD obeys that and starts playing from whatever position in the song lines up with the Reaper cursor. This is what you want.

Thanks for the replies and clarifications !
I was using song mode and am quite familiar with most fo what you decsribed, but just thought of this last night.
Actually now Im thinking of getting down with the MIDI method now as per the developer's preference.

Midi command method is great. When you set it up (in case you don't know): in your midi editor window> file> customize note names> load note names from file> navigate to your MDrummer folder> you'll find a Reaper note names file to load.
And remember, in Song or Midi command MD will still play random loops from the loop index boxes if you tick random loops.

Thanks for the Reaper note name tip. That will definitely be a big help.
I just did a song within 10 mins with the midi command way. Whoooah...

You mean if you enable playback and just let it play? Simple - there is NO indicator of what MDrummer should play. You basically said to him that he should play breaks every specified number of bars, but didn's say which, so he improvises
. If you use MIDI commands however, the break will be selected by velocity of these commands. Generally if you use MIDI commands, you usually don't enable automatic breaks, because you probably do that yourself.

In sequencer mode (auto breaks off) I can enable or disable random (index) loops.
In Song mode (or midi command) I can enable or disable random (index) loops.
In sequencer mode (auto breaks on), I don't have the choice.
It would be good to still have that choice, but If MDrummer insists upon playing random (index) loops even though I have unticked (disabled) that, should not the random loops box be greyed out?
My wife thinks I should not concern myself with these small anomalies!
