That doesn't really make sense and I'm not sure where you're getting that from. I think it's safe to say that most people who replied so far (myself included) are probably too old/un-hip to have that sort of hipster attitude.

You're missing the point. It's just a simple discussion of artists that we don't think fit neatly into one certain category. Nothing contentious or dick-measuring about it. It's just a music discussion, dude, so let's just chillout...or ambient...or death metal...

Put it this way, if someone who had never heard of They Might Be Giants asked you what they sounded like or what style of music they made, how would you describe them? (aside from the obvious telling them to go listen to them). Personally, I'd have a very hard time with that because I can't really think of a category that they fit into, or naming someone who sounds similar. That's all I'm talking about here.

Despite their popular crossover "hits" like Silence, etc., the majority of their work (esp. everything up to Semantic Spaces) would not be remotely considered "poptronica". It's more like a mixture of ambient and industrial, 100% instrumental, etc.
Bill Leeb is easy to categorize. Delerium is an imitation of Enigma, just like Front Line Assembly is an imitation of Skinny Puppy.

I think that the artists that you describe pretty much do fit neatly into a category. You're missing my point, I think that what happens is that the stuff you like tends to sound more diverse to you.

It's no different than when people say "EDM all sounds alike, it sounds like somebody left the drum machine running." It's really about where you listen for the differences and where you see variety.

Somebody mentioned Tool above, please, what's hard to categorize about pretentious butt rock? Tool is so easy to put in a box I'm not sure that we can make a box small enough.

Tool in a nutshell:

Some abstract or oddly ambient opening.
Alternating jangly guitars and butt rock heavy guitar.
Pretentious lyrics that appeal to theatre types
Abstract or oddly ambient reprise.

I expect to find them in the ALT-ROCK section mixed in with Nirvana.

If you like tool, you might find what they do all over the place, I have yet to hear a tool track that I didn't hate within one minute and which I couldn't immediately say, "sounds like tool." Oh sure, they occasionally throw in a funky riff or two, but then it's back to the butt rock staples. Chooga chooga chooga, "Your daddy didn't molest you, it isn't rape if you want it Chooga chooga chooga...cue strangling cats slowed down to 1/8th tempo.

Funny!
I wanted to suggest Tool too.

I recommended them to a friend once and he asked what kind of music they made and I had no clue what I should say.
I'm not really good with the whole genre thing, though :hihi:

Autechre and the hundreds of imitators are also hard to categorize. I'm actually surprised the genre Nazis didn't come up with a name for that kind of music yet. There seem to be at least 12 genres for every little sound variation of all kinds of other electronic music :hihi:

I guess that's what makes both of these artists two of my absolute favorites!

Cheers

I agree with you on FLA, but that's hardly surprising given their background. I disagree somewhat with regard to the Enigma reference - yes, Delerium has some songs and albums that are Enigma-esque so there's an obvious influence, but that encompasses only a fraction of their entire discography. Not to mention that Delerium has been around longer.

Maybe I just call it all "experimental [insert closest genre here]" and [/thread].

Yeah, I can see that point. But, I don't think that's all there is to it. Back to Tool, I've always sorta liked them, but not enough to buy their albums and despite that, I think they're a perfect example of a band that is hard to pigeonhole and I don't think your description is even in the ballpark.

Not to keep beating the Delerium horse to death, but it's a different story with them. If you've ever listened to their early stuff from 1989-2000 or so (yes, they pre-date Enigma btw), there's no way in hell someone who knows anything about music would categorize those albums/tracks in the same style the same as their stuff from e.g., Poem or Chimera, which is also much different than their more mainstream pop sound from their last album. So, it's not just a matter of me being tuned into them so deeply than I can pick out stylistic elements that are imperceptible to others - they truly have changed styles pretty drastically. Compare something like Morpheus or Stone Tower to Karma and Music Box Opera and see for yourself.

All that said, I do think you're on to something there. It makes sense that a person would be most perceptive to things that make their favorite artists unique. I don't view it as some selfish need to see their precious favorite artist as being special, though. Case in point, I'm perfectly fine calling FLA ( one of my favs) an industrial act, or Dead Kennedys a punk act because those categories fit.
