I have a specific question regarding drum programming. Well, perhaps a couple.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to program the snares(?) from the Fine Young Cannibals song, "Not the Man I Used to Be". It's a swingy shuffl-y thingy, a groove especially prominent in the opening of the tune. I haven't found a midi file to examine, nor have I been able to figure it out by looking at the wav files. I am at the random-successive iterations stage and I don't seem to be making any headway.
Any thoughts or attempts or links or,
sigh,
just when I thought I was getting better at drums, I am totally stumped!
Thanks for listening.

is this by chance a shifting rhytmic pattern?
one of my great new infatuations is with some of the rhythmic generator/sequencers with Reaktor because they can produce rhythm patterns that have a finer resolution than a simple 16 beats to a bar drum machine and they can be a lot more complex or shifting as well.
not to say that the more basic parts are not impossible and I've already managed by luck and repetition to work out some of the patterns in microTonic that Reaktor Vierring generates.
I did this by concentrating on kick pattern and adding snare for one measure patterns and building up a compatible set measure by measure.
i don't know if that will be any help or not, but that would be my suspicion based on your description.
