I bought a Discman that can read mp3's from CDR's back in 2002. I didn't buy a flash memory based player until 2006.

Must've been some cheapo thingie from the supermarket, probably 2003 or 2004. I got 1 or 2 after that, i remember i had a Trekstor i.beat Organix. Nowadays, every Android phone has a decent to pretty good sound chip included, so there's not even the need to buy a dedicated MP3 player anymore. My 170€ phone has a similar sound quality to an iPod...

Roughly dividing it up, I would say that 80's was the time of the Walkman cassette player, the 90's the Discman CD player, and then the 00's was the time of the ipod/zen flash based player.

I bought a 60GB Creative Zen Player in 2008, I hardly use it anymore now that my phone can have 32GB flash card.

I had a Nike one I got for about $20, it held 4 songs. Only one I've ever had, sold it as I never used it. Can't see ever buying one again.

iRiver h120 here and I still use it with the great Rockbox firmware.

Though it looks kinda clumsy compared to recent mp3 players but still a nice device.

I still have my Sony Walkman (with "MegaBass") that I bought like 25 years ago. Don't use it anymore, though

. I wait until it becomes "vintage" and sell it for buckloads of money to some kids who want to experience the real tape sound.

I don't have a "dedicated" mp3 player ... but my hifi CD player can play discs with mp3s on, and my smart phone has a music player app.

Yes, it was some French thing (Archos) at the end of 2001. Weighed a ton, terrible firmware, dodgy build quality. It was iPods all the way after that.

I don't even have a mp3 player... I don't need listening to music everywhere I am, and I hate these small headphones!

I love it to be outside on a hill or mountain, just listening to nature sounds for a few hours, without any human music!

32gb Creative Zen, around 2006 - followed by a 16gb Creative Zen vision in 2008. Finally gave up on dedicated players around 2011 with my first android phone, and have used a phone ever since.

Very true! We are surrounded by "music" pretty much anywhere we go nowadays, supermarket, bars and even restaurants, we should switch of once in a while and if we listen to music, let's do it consciously!

I found my first mp3 player, it was on a football field. It had hardcore punk in it. :P 2005 I think, lasted a few months before it broke down entirely (I think it was an Creative device).

I bought a iPod touch in around 2010, works fine still, though I hate Itunes and can't run recent applications on it. I've dj'ed with it a few times and I use it regularly as the music source connected to my stereos.

I only this year got myself a phone that's half smart-half smartass, haven't used it for music (it's always low on batteries anyway).

In times where you can load your 99 millions favorite songs on your mobile phone, silence (and nature sounds) is luxury!

When I listen to music, I do it intentionally with my professional speakers at home which is more a listening pleasure than listening to it with headphones...

I bought a Nomad Juke Box 3 with a 20GB hard drive built into it and it was like the coolest thing ever! I still have it but I don't use it anymore. Actually i tore it apart in a naive attempt to build my own stereo system which is a project still on the backburner...
