I agree - I am the one who broke it. I would expect to have to pay for it. I thought it would cost more and I thought for sure when I gave them my name they'd be like "who are you and what version of software do you have?" but they had all my information - I didn't have to tell him anything but my name and my problem. I had a very positive experience with Steinacle's support today.
:D Always nice to hear about a positive experience once in awhile among all the usual bad press from Steiny. I even read about one guy needing it right away and they overnighted it to him.

Simple music philosophy - Those who can, make music. Those who can't, make excuses.

Yes, I think what they do is to charge your credit card for the replacement fee and overnight shipping and if the broken dongle (or disc) doesn't arrive within a reasonable timeframe (a week or two), then they would charge the rest like if it was a new program. But that overnight emergency service is done on an individual case by case I believe... nevertheless good to know that something like that exists when you really need it.

Steinberg seems to raise quality a lot lately. Well... perhaps not the one or another plugin (I'm still not so fond of Halion 3) but look at the updates for SX2 for example.

Another thing that was very positive in my opinion:
I wanted to register an old copy of Cubase VST5 (yeah yeah... I'm still using this lil' devil) just the other day. So I called the Steinberg hotline (1,30Euro/minute - expensive) to clear some minor issues. After sending in an eMail with a scan of the front and backside of the registration card and my user data... one hour waiting time and it was regged (after a control call if the mail came in or not).

I still remember times while the Steinberg company was a bit grumpy and lazy. Seems like they really raised the quality at the customer support.

To the dongle thingy:
Well... good that you don't have the old printer hardware key anymore. Everytime I moved my PC or connected a printer to the key I was scared to death that I break the printer port or even the mainboard (newer PCs). o_O
