I was thinking of going to BandCamp to sell the one or another track, or even an album. As of this moment, it looks like EVERY media service is somewhat borked.

YT recently announced to go the "Twitch" route with paid content - they even force SMALL LABELS to adapt or being blocked. It can only go from there with independent musicians and companies that use own compositions. Then there is SoundCloud which constantly forks over their users, we have tons of Pay-Per-View or Pay-Per-Listen streaming services. Facebook wants an own streaming service (actually, is even worse than that with the "auto audio detection"). The list goes on.

And who opens their hands and pockets? The big labels.
The "algorithm" assumes that you used "stolen content", and BAM... pay until infinity. And nobody gives a f*ck about that.

Heck, if it goes by the GEMA here in Germany, they even want (by their own ideal scenario) cash for your OWN PRODUCTIONS streamed on your OWN WEBPAGE, even if you're not a GEMA member (though they state so otherwise through direct contacts - I had it recently with them). But if you want to release anything on CD, you still need to get in touch with the GEMA in terms of clearance.

WTF is going on?!

Out of control consumerism. Short sighted profit making that proves that none of these companies have the slightest interest in the particular business field they happen to be trading in. I know that you probably already know this - just getting it off my chest. So many things make me angry and sad these days

Which leads to this one:
"If we don't use the 'communities', why are those people left out?!"

Everything forces you to go online these days. Heck even in news papers: "want to read more, go to www-dot....."

we need a syndicate, some sort of union of unsigned, independent artists and free ("until now") content creators...
something with the power to promote actions like suddenly pulling all our content from such sites at once , in a synchronized mass action

yeah, i'd like to pull all my videos from youtube and put them elsewhere, somewhere that is less google

Like I said, only a mass action at the same time would have enough effect to get noticed (if ever)

It's sad really that, we the people, DO have the ultimate power but we constantly fail to use it. If only we all realised the simplicity of how we can change things - by choosing very carefully where to spend your money you could force corporations to play by your rules and not theirs. When the stream of cash starts to slow and run dry they will soon change their ways. Use their own weapon against them - money. It's a pipedream but an en masse withdrawal of content from all the parasites would be a wonderful thing.

That's what I do. I don't pay for srteaming music, I don't pay for download music. I only pay for CDs, if and when I decide I want that music, and only if the prices are reasonable. When these companies realize that there is no money in these business models, they will change. I remembered when everybody started to talk how Internet would contribute to democratize and allow unknown musicians to acess the people, and I told that it would kill music. Semms like I had a point, unfortunately.

It's impossible to stop things and go backward... All things that can be copied are losing their value - a real Van Gogh painting has a high value but if you copy it on paper, it's worth nearly nothing! Songs can be copied, too - now if everyone even allows free downloads, people will realize that music is worth nothing. The value of music nowadays is less than of toilet paper!

We should rather make a good, low-priced album on a CD with 10 songs and a nice booklet & cover within 2 years than making 50 free download-able, forgettable mainstream tarnce songs in a year!

Probably need to start a self hosting system with a P2P lookup system and web front end exit points.

Amazon S3 costs pennies to host. I've been trying work on a proof of concept for the hosted side. Hopefully one will get that straightened out.

Forming podcast networks is probably another way out.

Trying to "change the system" is a waste of time though IMHO...
