want to do a bit of research about music consumption behavior of people.

So where do you get the music that you listen to (or play)...? Here are some alternatives:

Spotify, FM-radio, Beatport, iTunes store, DiscoGS, Youtube, buy CD/Vinyl from psy party/other party, order CD/Vinyl directly from label, digital download directly from label, Youtube, Mixcloud, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Juno Download, Digitally Imported, traditional CD/Vinyl shop in a street, decks.de, Ektoplazm, flea market, something else that is not listed..

If I'm interested in something, I'm trying to find artist web page and check, if there is some kind of 'buy digital version' option, it's convenient and I know it's probably best option for the artist. If there's no way to buy digital directly I will look for CD. Spotify, Beatport, iTunes - I don't touch. Generally I won't buy from a service that requires registering or installing stuff. Also I buy used CDs and vinyls occasionally on e-bay, mostly rare stuff that is not available new.

Prefer direct donation / download from artists site if available.

Most of the artists I like are either on BandCamp or Beat Port and those are the sites where I'm most likely to search for new music.

If not, I'll resort to iTunes for a specific album or release, but only if forced to.

Don't use streaming services.

Always FLAC or WAV if available. MP3 if not.

Peace,
Andy.

I do not like iTunes. Actually I hate the iTunes app and will not install it to my computer. It's huge load of crap and bloatware. What I hate especially is that you can not even preview songs without installing/opening iTunes.

These days it's mostly in that order:
Aritst's own/label digital download webshop or Bandcamp page.
7Digital
CDbaby
Junodownload

If music is not available on any of those places or if I get annoying "not available in your region message" then I might proceed to search out other means that also might include ordering a physical CD on some very rare occasions.

Usually I ignore any of the streaming services as these do disgrace to the quality of music.

Youtube, Soundcloud and Bandcamp for streaming. eMusic, Boomkat and occasionally Bleep for buying. I always buy digital. Packaging never interested me; I've got some strong opinions about the value added by packaging.

Beatport is insanely expensive in the UK. Like, ridiculous. I always see people talking about "tracks in the Beatport top 10" or whatever and I just think "really?" It's completely off-the-radar in the UK because we're talking a flat £1.73 per track with no discount when you buy a full release. I really don't understand it. I thought maybe its an overseas thing, but then I actually get eMusic very cheaply because I signed up 10 years ago when it was still a US only operation and the dollar was tanking against the pound. When they launched in the UK they kindly honoured my old price of around £6.50 for 40 tracks. I get great value out of that.

Spotify mostly for old music, music I have in physical formats but stored/buried away somewhere else, and mainstream music. I'm possibly considered a horrible human being for using such a hidious abomination for even that.

Then there's the occasional Bandcamp and such purchases, downloads as directly connected to the artist as possible. Our very own Zombie Queen for instance does some good stuff. 8) Bleep.com for whenever Autechre has a new release out, like every fourth year or so. I recently also had a healthy serving of The Knife remixes in mp3 format and a couple of albums as tagged wav (!, misstagged bonustracks for their debutalbum though) and flac. Though The Knife offcourse are borderline mainstream and don't really need neither my money nor support I consider them at least somewhat independent with all their weird moves and their own recordcompany and all and thus worth supporting.

And the rare free downloads and streaming of pretty good stuff. Speaking of which, does anyone know when Sendy will have an EP or albums worth of delicious earcandy? I'm sure I for one will happily pay for it ;)

from my cd shelves and boxes of vinyl.
from any where i can find something interesting to me.
nothing better than spending a few hours perusing racks in a record shop, not looking for anything in particular but finding a gem you never even heard of before.

These days it's bandcamp all the way. Sometimes, a net label release something for free that I like. Otherwise, I still listen to my vinyl and CD collection. But I rarely buy new music in physical format, except for Brain Grainger/Milieu/Coppice Halifac stuffs or for limited edition that I think is beautiful looking.

I buy CDs online, then rip mp3s from them.

Spotify, used CDs online, amazon mp3s, itunes, beatport

progstreaming to get fed new stuff then bandcamp to buy FLACs. I'm desperately trying to avoid loading the floor with further physical purchases... I'll also nose around on bandcamp for new stuff now and then if I need something less proggy :)

Actually I have a small stack of CDs that I know I'll never play again so those will go to a local used CD store and I'll exchange them rather than get cash for them.

I get stuff like Conway Twitty's greatest hits at the gas station on cassette and VHS.
