Just curious as to whether anyone who was running it until recently felt compelled to jump ship when MS dropped support.

I'm getting the impression there is no way to continue on with it (even though it works fine for 99% of what I'm doing) if for no other reason than developers are acting like it doesn't warrant their attention anymore (read: don't buy any new software, even though it might work, and don't even expect updates to work or be supported).

I'm a little perturbed but mostly because it will likely be a freaking pain in the ass to redo my system. It's certainly doable since I already own Win 7 but I'm not installing it twice so I have to do the whole 32 to 64 bit thing, which means I may lose $1200+ worth of UAD-1 plug-ins since I don't plan to buy (and can't possibly afford ATM) a UAD-2 card. There's also countless reinstallations and reauthorizations to deal with, yadda yadda.

In other words, it's no small thing to kill and resurrect my entire system.

Any advice anyone can give me about how to make the transition easier would be appreciated.

Keep XP as it is, install 7 on a new partition and fill it up slowly, occasionally installing an app or two when you feel like it.

Interesting idea but I desperately need a new system drive too. I guess I could transfer the existing OS to a new drive first but that's another new frontier for me--never done it before.

I'd just as soon get it over with because I could really use the RAM and most of the reinstallation/reauthorization will be plug-ins which I need to have available. I guess I could run a 32 bit Reaper and a 64 bit Reaper on two different partitions but I'm not sure the UAD stuff is worth the effort. This is all just one big pain in the ass but i think I already said that.

What does this matter - as far as it doesn't behave like piece on junk. W 8.1 is so far most effective, and you can always trim the metro away. H.

I dropped it a long time ago. I still have a PC upstairs with XP on it that I've kept only because it still has some stuff on it that I've been too lazy to transfer yet.

They haven't properly supported any release, there were times I updated and it wouldn't boot into Windows.

Tell me how! :hyper:

I just did a fresh install of XP . I'll be using it for a while until I can afford a better computer.
I'll need to change MIDI interfaces and soundcards, so it won't be cheap.
I'd rather just get on with making music as the system I have works for me. When I feel like it's holding me back , that's when I'll upgrade.

I have a sleeper PC that I did a Windows Update on, just before XP went down.

Haven't turned it on after I did that, haven't got homesick yet :D
