I won a pretty big competition, but no real promotion done?

So about a month ago i won the official remix competition for Major Lazer's "Aerosol Can", meaning they hand picked my remix out of around 1500 others

I'm not sure about the hand picking though

How do you hand pick somebody out of 1500+ entries?

Estimating that each remix is about 5 min length, it would take about 125 hours to listen through them all once, that is over 3 weeks work (assuming a 40 hour work week).

And to be able to review music properly you need to give a track more than one listen.

That's one way of thinking....
It took me less than 15 seconds to decide this wasn't worth anymore of my time. I could have probably gone through all 1500 in a day rejecting the vast majority and picked my favourite from what was left. I listened to the original and that was gone in less than 5 seconds ! So probably actually only a mornings work. And the winner would certainly have been an instrumental version.

Anyway regardless of my taste, well done to Peachey for winning the contest.
I won a competition simply because I was the sole entrant. I took the prize and moved on.

This is what I would do if I were you: I would suggest FOLLOWING popular producers (that have similar/better production chops than yours), working on their mixes, and gaining their fan base or atleast throwing your name out there.

Say, "Popular track ft. Your name" would still be listened to by 10K followers of popular producer, and they might click on you out of interest, and start following you (if your stuff is good).

I would hope not if it were posted in the Music Cafe, that seems like the place to get something listened to for comments, etc. But I do see your point.

That being said, you had better have done something more than win a remix contest if you expect to generate buzz about your work as an artist/producer, one feat does not a resume make, nor would I take a chance on promoting someone on the basis of one piece of work.

Not that I'm an authority on the subject, but I DO have a manager these days.

The other thing to remember is to ask yourself why it should be you over the thousands of others competing for the same space? What do you have that they don't, and what can you do to get an edge over them?

As time goes by people who make recorded music become smaller fish in an ever increasing sea. You can't expect to just make it because you momentarily gained a smaller amount of exposure than the others.

not sure I completely agree Mike, I look around and see the bands and artists who have had commercial success and I cannot say for a fact that they have anything others do not except for what the OP is complaining about, promotion. One person promoting themselves is difficult, having someone in the biz with the right contacts promoting for you leads to more people promoting for you.

I'm dont think complaining about not getting promotion is the way to get more people to promote your music though

I see what you're saying, but I'm more thinking in terms of what would get a manager/agent/promoter to be interested in you in the first place and to think about it. Sadly it doesn't have to always be talent, it might be image or being in the right place at the right time.

Contacts is definitely really important, but you have to be out there and promote, and schmooze, and know when to hold your tongue, etc.

Yep that is quite true. As for getting manager good for you!! Good managers are hard to come by in rural Ontario. But we are getting one as well.

when it says 'remix' i don't listen. if it's built from the ground up, it's more interesting. the only remixes i listen to are when a band remixes their own stuff; like when new order or depeche mode remix their own tunes. whenever it's 'person b remixing band a', i pass. ymmv

Aren't the organizers responsible for promoting their event? As someone who helped organize some events around here I thought that was done by someone either, appointed or asked by the group holding the event...or through committee...

Yep that is quite true. As for getting manager good for you!! Good managers are hard to come by in rural Ontario. But we are getting one as well.
