How to deal with a 'crack chap'

I recently advertised an unused boxed version of some music software on a website asking for a swap for another piece of software.

Somebody responded and I sent off my software. To my annoyance the software I received appears to be a cracked version on a CD-R!!

I have emailed the guy asking him to return my software and told him that what he is doing is not legal and that I will not use cracks. I have a suspicion he will ignore my request.

I would not really want to get the Police involved but would be interested to hear how other KVRers would proceed in similar circumstances.

Just tell him that you "might" contact the police or some lawyer. That should be enough.
In case it isn't, I would indeed do so - such exploited lameness deserves a decent slap.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Looks like a perfect case of fraud

Take out an ad in the seediest magazine/website you can find stating that you have a fetish for used condoms and that you would like people to post them to you.

(Of course you use his address though :D)

That should piss him off after a while.

..or you could try the lawyers but this would be more fun.

I think usually the crack comes wrapped in foil and they often hold it in the mouths for quick disposal if the police turn up. In order to deal with him, I believe you need to kiss him to exchange goods. Not entirely sure what you do with the money tho.

I like 2Windy's suggestion best!

Thanks for the amusing responses. I almost feel better about it all now!

Contact him - tell him you won't use cracked software and if he doesn't return your boxed version, you will contact the relevant fraud agency in your country (maybe even an anti-piracy hotline). Print out all communication you have had with him, hopefully you would have had some communication over email? If you did it by phone, write down a rough list of what calls you made and what you talked about. You'll need this info if it goes to the fraud investigation level.

If he doesn't relent, bust his crack lovin ass! :x :) Don't let him get away with it

Don't listen to him! It's a scam! :hihi:

Sorry..... you probably get that a lot. :( Just like Donald Trump gets for saying "You're fired!"....... and for his wig. :)

I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but you may have been had. Do you have a real address, or just a PO Box??

Confronting the guy may work, or it may not, depedning on whether he feels you can actually find him.

In the future, you'd be better off dealing with folks who are somewhat known quantities, like the people here. Most of the folks here who have more than a hundred or two posts are probably not scam artists. It's too much work in order to scam some lousy software. Ditto for most eBay users who have a lot of solid feedback (the only exception there being scammers who have hijacked a legitimate "clean" account, which does happen from time to time).

Let us know how it goes, and good luck. Don't hesitate.... fast work will probably be required.

who knows. but from what ive seen and heard here under guise of this problem,no. i dont think after hearing as many horror stories as i do about transactions going bad that ill ever buy software off the net unless i KNOW WHAT im going to get and if and when im going to get it.
