peejunk quoth You tell me that rules of series counterpoint, functional harmony and all those other classical practices (like motive mutations, sonata, recital and other structures etc.) are not exactly that - formulae.
No more than the rules of grammar cause all classical literature to be formulaic.

Obviously we can appreciate the formulae that are stuck with us for so long they're considered natural. But those being obviously new and not even properly explored (or properly formulated) are shit, right?
How come all those traditional ethinc melodic musical traditions could make wonderful (and sometimes very elaborate) piecees without any of that, so basic that we compare it to grammar, formulae, while yet speaking a dangerously simmiliar language?

By the way, I wanted to add. I'm sure this has been mentioned already... but, trance is formatic, just as every other style of music is. I don't understand what all the whinning and flames are about? The only conclusion I can come to is that you see a trance thread, and this means you have an opportunity to be an asshole for a minute. What gives? Me personally, I don't care for Hip Hop/Rap. I simply don't understand it, let alone know enough about the scene and producers to comment intelligently about it. Therefor, I skip over it.
Sit down for a half hour and listen to 'your' style of music. Don't tell me that it doesn't follow a basic root of composition.
And vurt... If you really have that much time on your hands to post concerning my grammer this early in the morning, I feel sorry for you.

Curious to what you are listening to though, if you can't find a formula?

Ah yes, its always the ones who like to throw around the image of formal information that their knowledge is far superior to that of the naturally aquired, bleet bleet
The long rambling here expresses exactly what was being said in the other thread only now its correct
I thank you
An arshole for a minute?? a question was asked, it was answered, what should we do, ignore it cos we are giving an answer that is unacceptable to the questioner, you got me beat I give up

peejunk quoth
Almost proved my point, thank you.
Maybe. But grammar and style aren't the same thing. I think I was addressing a perceived conflation of the two.
Obviously we can appreciate the formulae that are stuck with us for so long they're considered natural.
But are they formulae? I mean I'm no expert on classical music, but in terms of a 'formula' I dont hear any obvious correlation between (say) Bach and Holst.
But those being obviously new and not even properly explored (or properly formulated) are shit, right?
I have no idea. I prefer bands who have as little as possible in common with other bands, and hence adhere to a 'formula' that is 'explored' or 'formulated' as little as possible. Generally, that is what I consider 'originality' to be.
How come all those traditional ethinc melodic musical traditions could make wonderful (and sometimes very elaborate) piecees without any of that, so basic that we compare it to grammar, formulae, while yet speaking a dangerously simmiliar language?
Im not quite sure I understand that. Can you elaborate on what you mean?
