I wasn't talking to anyone directly.

Curious to what you are listening to though, if you can't find a formula?

i listen to many and varied things in the course of a day
from kate bush to napalm death to mozart to addntox towhyterabbyt to magazine to pinkfloyd to plaid the only thing in common unless you have a broad taste in music i suppose would be they use instruments which make sounds
the bastards :x

Maybe you didn't understand what I said, Vurt. Of course different genres of music have different formulas. That's an obvious given. Keep it all within one realm of music, and then answer me again.

Having studied a lot of classical music (not through choice, but I am since glad I did!), it is all bound by set rules of the time. Occasionally those rules were broken by people such as Satie by composing with no time signature or bar lines.

4 part chorale harmony is a great example. The whole basis of composition regarding that genre follows a strict set of rules laid done by Bach, such as the leading note always rising to the dominant, or never allowing a pitch to rise by a flattened 5th (ie C to F#).

I can see the point about music having to be laid down in a set format due to DJ friendlyness (!), but that doesn't stop a good tune being written, ie Daft Punk. Take one of my favourite four to the floor tracks by 'Alan Brax', called 'Intro', follows a very set pattern but is funky as hell!

When it comes to trance etc. (which is obviously what this is all about (again!)) for me the music is lacking soul. Anyway, we can all choose what we listen to and that's what matters?!

no, no, on the contrary. actually, i've tried to be neither personal nor agressive in my question in purpose.

i think your point is interesting. i can agree on many of your arguments.

you see, english is not my native language. for me, 'formula' is rather pejorative but now i understand you were talking about what i'd call the form.

and i agree with you: there's no music without a form, save - perhaps - pure improvisation. (even improvisation cannot exist without some formal limitations, tho)

and i agree with you: in classical music there are few Masters (the ones who can invent within the conventional rules or are willing to explore new grounds) for a lot of followers who use the acquired formulae.

however - and that's just me, my feelings, not the universal truth - i am not able to compare dance music with classical music. for me: two universes working on different levels. (please note that i do like dance music, too.)

cheers

I'd like to add for the record that I don't even listen to trance. I'm just a little guy sticking up for the basics of music!

vurt, you got me on that one. ;)

Uh okay.

I thought you meant music I make. But if there's a formula that covers

Alan Stivell to Tangerine Dream to HP Lovecraft to Mission of Burma to eX-Girl to Lothar and the Hand people to Nick Drake to Tangerine Dream to Muslimgauze to X-Ray Spex to Bert Jansch to Wire to Bad Religion to Nocturnal Emissions to The Legendary Pink Dots to Opeth to Jah Wobble to The Cowboy Junkies to Van Der Graff Generator to Christus Christus to Throwing Muses to vurt

then I dont know what it is.
An idiot on Set Theory:

and i do like trance its just been a few years since ive heard any boundaries being pushed
and to me personally music in any form should be fluid enough at least to bend occassionally :D 8)

This was not about defending statik (or what his name was) and his threads. This was more about some ugly (and just opinionated ie. based on NOTHING BUT one's own opinion) remarks I keep reading on this forum constantly.

And when I calculate how shortly I've been here it's not a nice trend to notice. When I stand up to defend trance it could've been any other genre. It's just that 99% of the time it's trance being slated here.

Vurt: If you cannot see common formula in Floyd music between Wish you were here and Dark side, or between Animals, Wall and Final Cut (ie. Roger Waters on an ego trip trilogy, then I can only say that love does do wonders.

Keep in mind that this is coming from a long time and a big fan of Pink Floyd (them being by far my favourite artists, I have all their shit from Piper at the Gates of Dawn and to a VHS edition of P.U.L.S.E. that I bought when it just came out. Some of older shit on both vinyl and CD, some only on CD, some early and rare singles only as mp3z).

kinda why i picked the four specific albums actually, yes i agree if you start at the beggining and work through album by album there is a ssteady progression.
i could have quite easily picked any band with a decent recording history and if you snatch from far enough apart there will be jumps
but im not actually that bothered im just an insomniac with a need to type because im off me tits on valium, and i find being cheeky and argumentative helps me sleep :P
