Discussion of Ozric Tentacles’ use of delay.

Hi. I am very interested in the various technical ways that OT use delays on synths in their songs. Subdivisions, panning, feedback lengths. Does anyone have any intelligent insight into this matter? Two songs that I am thinking of in particular are Eternal Wheel and the Moksha song Trans Synapse Express.

im sure their was an interview with ed wynne on there tho where he explained how he used what?
or it may have been in future music?
but to be honest having seen them live more times than ive had salad i wouldnt say there was any hard and fast rule other than experimenting.
but i will keep an eye on this thread as it would be nice to get an idea of how to keep a mix tidy with as much going on as the ozrics manage

Someone asked him about delay on guitar but he just said to experiment. I am interseted in how they use delays on synths. Maybe I should start a more general thread on delay tricks and post it in the effects forum? Here is that site: http://www.geocities.com/ozrictentacles_web/

I don't think Ozric really uses given method to their delays. Not to sound rude, but I don't hear anything special about their use of delay. Everything else they do is magic though

Yes it is. I love it, too.Deranger604 wrote: Btw... Spirals in Hyperspace is a masterpeice, love every second of it
Re delays. Sounds like a lot of dotted tap-delays.
I tried to analyze it sometimes but was blown away and forgot about it.
It's about time for the past to end

rok, do you mean dotted eighth notes, sixteenths or what? Can you elaborate? Those are triplets?? What plug would do those tempo synced?

Deranger604, I disagree, their delays are definitely tempo synced. I just would like to know the various formulas they use.

Dotted and triplets are not the same. For example, a dotted 8th is a note that's played for the time period it would take to play an 8th with a 16th for one note duration. Triplet is 3 notes in the space of two, like 8th note triplets would be played in the same time it takes to play 2 8th notes. Make sense?

Thanks normal. The best I have found is delta-ping. However you can't pan the delay lines. I will try the klanglabs, although it looks unnecessarily complicated. Yesterday I went through a whole buttload of delays.I am sure I can find a delay that works, if I can figure out the formulas that they use (which is why I asked). I was hoping someone would know.

Devon, I think I understand your explaination of triplets but not dotted.

I never said they weren't synced. I just stated that there was no genious technology behind it. Most delays are synced to BPM these days, therefore there is nothing 'too' special about them.Satasha wrote:Deranger604, I disagree, their delays are definitely tempo synced. Yes...Ozrics have the best use of syncopated delays. They must have a common MIDI clock when performing to keep it all in sync between the two synth setups( Eddies and Seaweeds)I got the concert DVD from PongMasters ball...fantastic!
However when I was doing the presets for our M42 Nebula, while the the constant chuga goes on from the LFO clock, the Stereo X-Delay is what makes the sound. I found if you use one channel set to say 1/2 BMP and the other to 3/4 BMP ( from memory here, may not be right)..rather, two different settings is what I am getting at...you can get those syncopated delay times ..like polyryms. Thats part of the sound.
