Dune 2... and imo, it is no comparison...
Dune 2 is far more diverse... sounds excellent... fulfills the same sort of sounds plus lots more... Dune has more filter varieties and is easy on the cpu

Don't know Dune2 but re-create orgasmic 70' Progressive Rock sound it's wonderful with Sylenth1!

DUNE 2 easily. I cannot find a single thing in Sylenth1 that I miss, now that I use DUNE 2. But make no mistake, Sylenth1 is still great for what it is. Just that, in 2014, DUNE 2 is superior in every single way possible (except for the silly number of banks and presets available for Sylenth1, which tend to sound same old, same old..). DUNE 2 is far more diverse and capable, while retaining the same ease of use and same (or even less) CPU usage.

Not a fair comparison, as Dune 2 was just released recently, and Sylenth1 has been around for many years.

Not a fair comparison as Sylenth1 is the #1 virtual synth in the world but Dune 2 sounds good. And...Electra 2 is also superior to Dune 2
Comparing a superior Sylenth 1 to the likes of Dune 2 is like comparing a Jupiter 8 Moog Sub Fatty Tribute to a Casio CZ101 Korg Volca Keys.

I'm fairly new to synths, so far the ones that have caught my attention are
Juno-60
Prophet 08
Access Virus
Saurus
TyrellN6
Dune 2
Largo
Massive
Blofeld
Spire
Olga
Roughly in that order. I haven't landed a Juno-60 yet, but I managed to snag an AlphaJuno-1. I also recently bought a Prophet 08 & Olga. I've had Massive for a long time now, as well as all the other synths included in NI's Komplete (Spark, Prism, Monark, Absynth, Reaktor)...
But Sylenth1 is not on my list. I've listened to several demos, I'm listening to one now... just doesn't do anything for me. But that's just me.
Oh yeah, that Modulus-002 is pretty hot too.

Kinda true... but they are both currently available and comparably priced (Dune is slightly less money)... so in that sense they are comparable.Examigan wrote:Not a fair comparison, as Dune 2 was just released recently, and Sylenth1 has been around for many years.

Judging by your own tracks on soundcloud ...Wait, you don't have any tracks on Soundcloud or anywhere else. Where are your reference masters so we all can compare your mixes?HcDoom wrote:Judging by your own tracks on soundcloud, it really looks like you know what you talk about...not...

I bought a Sylenth1 license a long time ago when it was fairly new.
The computer that I had it on died an evil death and stupid me... I had not recorded any info regarding the license anywhere. I thought I did but when I went through my folder of printouts of soft synth license info it wasn't there. I tried contacting their support and heard... zero... zip... not a word or a reply indicating that they had received my inquiry and were able (or not) to do anything. So I moved on and started using other synths like Zebra2, the NI Komplete stuff from the time, Cameleon (this was pre-Alchemy), etc. I thought Sylenth1 was an okay synthesizer but honestly just didn't feel the desire to buy again or push on the developer for help recovering my license info a second time. That is me - my preference and whatnot and I also accept my responsibility for losing my original license info - my bad - but I was disappointed the developer didn't even respond with a "sorry you are out of luck".
I bought Dune 2 over our independence day holiday here in the USA and am enjoying it quite a bit. The filters sound excellent and in some sense due to the multiple oscillator and filter types and huge modulation matrix it feels "semi-modular" to me. I find the Sallen-Key filter models very musical.

Spire Vs Dune 2.
This would be a hard choice. So, I compromised and bought both.

You would get even better advice if you spelled out in greater detail what you were looking for in a soft synth. As you can probably tell from the responses you've already gotten, they are two very different synths.Grunwaldt wrote:I'm learning a lot, keep it going guys
How do you plan to use the synth? Will you design presets from scratch? Will you use stock presets without changing them? Are you a preset tweaker? Do you use straightforward synth sounds in your music or do you like complex, multi-layered sounds with lots of movement? Many of my preferences for soft synths comes down to workflow so I look for synths that I can efficiently, and intuitively modify sound with. But we all have different needs and likes, so general questions about which synth is better are quite meaningless IMO.

I would remove Sylenth1 from this list, because the development has stopped long time ago. Replace it with Spire and buy both
Dune2 is very special it cannot be easy replaced with another synth because this layering/Unison stuff is very unique and can create very thick and big sounds.
