Why do some hosts insist on loading files in the vst folder, that end with something else than the .dll extension ?

When developing I'll very often rename older version of my plugs to, say rhino.dll_ - I don't want the old version to be picked up by a vst host :-)

Name it Rhino.d11 then.:) Looks the same, so the user can understand. And the host probably wont pick it up? Maybe hosts read the every file even with bad extension?

My guess it it looks at the file header and loads in anyway, and doens't depend on the file extention.

Yeah, I noticed that in Bidule... renamed rhino.dll to rhino.dllx and it still found it.

Renamed it to rhino.dll.old, and it didnt though...

I really hope they don't scan all files blindly. This really wouldn't make sense, and use up an awful lot of time...
