Regedit suddenly quits!?!?

I'm doing some tweaks from musicxp.net and regedit won't stay open for more than a few seconds. newly installed xp and everything.

tried virus scan (from non-DAW boot partition - no virus scanner on DAW ) and used ad-aware too. nothing found.

spooky.

any ideas?

Trojan would be my first guess. I've had some that slipped past Norton Antivirus and Ad-Aware. I've never had a problem with regedit aborting but my tipoff was that the task manager would close almost immediately on opening. Try running the task manager and see if there is anything running that shouldn't be.

Finally, you might try running in Safe Mode and see if you still have the same problem when running regedit.

Sasser virus!

A rogue process manifested itself (I know my processes) and I googled it's name. Ran a cleaner on it and nailed the wee B*****d!

That boot-up is now completely banned from internet usage. It must have happened while I was doing Windows Update! To lazy to get them manually from safe boot-up.

However regedit (and msconfig) still bail after few seconds. Will try replacing exes.
