I tried this for the first time yesterday, and all I can say is that it's the dream host I've been looking for
. It's absolutely perfect for electroacoustic and experimental electronic music. It does still seem a little unstable however, and the interface update gets quite sluggish when your CPU is half loaded or above.

I downloaded the beta ages ago but haven't got round to installing it yet - does sound interesting though but I'm always slow to install stuff (trying to keep things relatively simple).

AudioMulch is incredibly powerful.
I've found it to be incredibly stable, what kind of problems did you have? I had a denormal-spike once that send my CPU to 150% once, and it stayed on it's feet.
It has the nice habit of not crashing when a plugin goes belly-up, too.
I use two hosts, really, Sonar for general-purpose work and AudioMulch for everything else.
I have yet to try the document-switcher, but being able to change a whole patch with your MIDI-controller is very cool for live-use.

I've been using Mulch a lot recently and am thinking of buying the full license finally. It is very stable, though yes, the interface may become somewhat sluggish wit CPU overload (though mine's a pretty old machine). Completed with EnergyXT Mulch becomes a (nearly) perfect tool for experimental stuff. And automation concept is just wonderful--this gives a really unique workflow.

i've been using audiomulch for a little while now, alongside tracktion. i think it's awesome, tho the interface makes it slightly unexciting to begin with. i mainly use the bubbleblower, because you get instant messed up results!
but i do like to watch DVDs thru it, or plug mics in and mess around with the awesome live capabilities that it has. i'm a big fan of the program, and promise promise promise i'll register soon!

Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

AudioMulch is one of the best VST hosts (in terms of stability and conformity to the VST specs) I ever worked with. I regularly update to the latest beta to test my plugins in it.cron wrote:I tried this for the first time yesterday, and all I can say is that it's the dream host I've been looking for. I never had the impression that it was unstable or sluggish on my machine, though. Ah well, one PC is not like the other, I guess.
Best,

The crash happened when I removed a plug from the chain, so it was more than likely something to do with that. I have a fondness for all those frequency mashing plugs which are just too out-there to ever get past alpha/early beta versions

AudioMulch is my perfect companion to Nuendo. Nuendo is great for multitrack mixing and mastering, but for experimental, creative tinkering, few apps can top Mulch. Lately I've been experiementing freely in AudioMulch and when I get to the point where I wish I had more traditional mixing/tracking control, I run all of the modules through a mixer contraption and solo each one to create multitrack files I can import into Nuendo. Talk about power...

I don't know much beyond it's reputation, but I'm curious as to the closest thing to it on a Mac...

I believe that would be Max/Msp. Max is actually much more powerful (but correspondingly more difficult to comprehend and more expensive).Buddah Buddy wrote:I don't know much beyond it's reputation, but I'm curious as to the closest thing to it on a Mac...
Actually, Live is similar to Mulch in some ways, tho with a sexier GUI and a shitload more features (and, again, a bigger price tag).
The great thing about Mulch is that there is no routing structure -- you can invent routing structures that could never exist in the analog realm. It's fun to use a host that doesn't refer to analog production as a point of reference.

Bidule, I think, or G (formerly known as Girl).Buddah Buddy wrote:I don't know much beyond it's reputation, but I'm curious as to the closest thing to it on a Mac...
Tried Bidule, it's very cool but still feels unfinished.
Haven't gotten around to testing G but it certainly looks nice.

Yay, someone around here singing the priases of Audiomulch that isn't me. For a while it seemed I was bringing up in every thread I posted in.
I love Mulch. Been using for 6 or 7 years now, and I'm still finding new ways of doing things with it. Unlike a lot of sequencer-style hosts, Mulch really is more like an instrument in its own right. Once you start getting into using complex automation envelopes, the functionality will skyrocket for you. And with EnergyXT running inside Mulch, the two really do compliment each other nicely. And that's, what, less than a hundred dollars for the two? Can't beat that.
I think PD has been compiled for Mac. It will do much of what you get in Mulch, at a lower level so harder, though automation is a bit underdeveloped if I recall. It's free though.
Cheers,
Steve

Well, here's some more praise for Mulch. I think it's great! and eXT inside mulch is truely an experimentor's dream. I think for the mac, the closest thing out the box would be Plogue Bidule. Plogue definately powerful... and what it lacks in some areas (like automation), it makes up in other areas (like low-level processing components and FFT). Both are great programs. I definately plan on buying a mulch license. I find these type of environments inspiring.

You might want to report this to Ross Bencina (and the developer of the VST, too).

just got my licence. though I've had some of the graphic problems you guys mention, this the stablest soft I've ever seen. I used it in thousands of ways and Mr.Bencina is really someone, the fxs modules are nasty!
glad to see it mentioned.
