Thanks to all who replied. Some very good suggestions regarding VSTi's, I'm already trying some of them and I'm liking the sound and possibilities.

I generally agree with the opinion that instruments are not as important as one might think and that the musical idea and inspiration that the musician has is actually the heart of the matter, but unless you have the necessary equipment you won't be able to produce those sounds, or perhaps you can but they won't be of the same professional quality.

I suppose we all know that Klaus' earlier works were sequenced on the big Moog and perhaps several other analog synths. No big secrets there.

However his newer music has more complex and intricate sequencing. For those who are not bored to listen (and why would you be, it's great music :)) please listen to this track. I think it was one of the first that he made with his newly acquired quasimidi rave-o-lution synths.

I think it sums up his new style very nicely. There are some simple sequences in the beginning, but new layers of sequences are being added (which fit in nicely within the existing sequence) = over time. Also I think Klaus is morphing some parameters over time so the sequences are not monotonous but seem to have a life of their own.

Incidentally, that track also has his characteristic "walls of sounds", which are usually long evolving pads. I've managed to make similar things with Alchemy, but does anyone know what synths did Klaus use back then for those female and male choruses?

Another thing - I am still not sure how he achieves special effects while playing the Minimoog. Notice the sound of the Minimoog as of 55:50 onwards in this track

That sounds like some kind of lead sound on minimoog but with added weird reverb and delays. Or perhaps something else?

Of course, I could shell out 600-1000 bucks for a real quasimidi rave-o-lution and buy it on ebay or some similar place, but I'd like to first experiment with soft synths and see if I can actually make anything close to Klaus' music.

Thanks again for the great suggestions, and please keep them coming.

There are dedicated soundsets for Tone2 Saurus and Tone2 Nemeis that focus on Arp + sequencer patches:

https://tone2.com/html/arpeggiator.html
https://tone2.com/html/arpmania.html

Saurus, Nemesis and Rayblaster could save/load Arp/sequencer parameters in *.arp files and those of Saurus and Rayblaster are comatible.

Besides that most Xils Lab synths like e.g. Syn'X (former "Synthix), PolyKB II, XILS 3.2 and XILS 4 contain a nice step sequencer. With most of them you could also record steps of the pattern directly from a MIDI-keyboard.

Pretty much any synth with envelopes can do it. What you need is a means of playing the sequence live. I'd look at the Arturia Beatstep, as it can act in exactly the way you describe.

The only problem with the Beatstep is that it only does note sequencing, not gate (note length) or other MIDI CC such as filter data. Such a shame, because with the addition of even a 2x8 mode (rather than a 1x16) it would be perfect!

This sounds like the actual patches/sounds do not matter and it's only necessary to use a proper step sequencer to sound like Klaus or TD. Of course this is not the case. They also used other sounds than only sequences.

Hi,

What are your preferred KS's albums or period?
Because there are a lot difference of synthesizers used following his albums.

If you got Kontakt you want to check out Old School Arps by CL Projects: http://www.sampleism.com/cl-projects/osa?sk=kt

Sequences that are tailor made for Berlin School, like Schulze, Tangerine Dream etc

I really got lots of albums from TD, Klaus Schulze (including the whole "Dark Side of The Moog" series) and also some from Christoper Franke.

This is one of my favorite tracks from TD and they seemed to use the PPG Wave 2.2/2.3 a lot (or mostly) in the whole Exit album:

Another one of my favorite tracks (or more or less the whole album) is Tyger:

I also love "le Parc", the title track of "Streethawk":

I like most of his music from various periods. I think his albums from the 70s are pretty much superb, such as Mirage (esp. Crystal Lake), X (especially Friedrich Nietzsche and Heinrich von Kleist). Audentity had some interesting tracks as well with sampling, but his output from the 80s and early 90s is not too interesting IMHO (I do like "Dreams" though).

However as of 1995 or so he got back to his previous style with some additions, so I definitely dig his "In Blue", "Are you sequenced?", almost all of the contemporary works CDs (e.g. "Local Scanning", "Opera Aperta" etc.). There is some intersting stuff in his collaboration with Pete Namlook ("Dark Side of the Moog" series).

Most of his newer works are pretty good, although he tends to use some too generic pads over and over again a bit too often IMO. I think he was more imaginative with pads in his earlier years.

I'm currently experimenting with the Thesys sequencer. It looks good so far.

Mine are first few. If I had to pick one I'd flip the bird and pick both Timewind and Irrlicht. Not so keen on his 80's stuff, but I say that about most bands around through 70's to 80's (although the live Poland album is amongst my fave's of TD, and that was using a lot of 80's gear of that time along with some older stuff)
Q. Why is a mouse when it spins?
A. The higher the fewer.

Love Tangerine Dream

My favourite albums are Quichotte, recorded live in East Berlin 1980, and the Logos (1982), especially the first side.

Christopher Franke used Moog equipment for sequencing in the 70's. Arturia's Moog Modular is half price now, most def something to check out for this kind of sound.

Also, for the reaktor users this is one fine ensemble, perfect for those Schulze sequences:

Regarding VST synths... I suggest Diva - Diva is effortlessly beautiful with a full round rich sound. Lovely Minimoog leads and gorgeous pads. IMO, best all around analogue emulation available today.

It is most certainly possible to have the same professional quality with softsynths... in the studio... live it is tricky because it's easy to have cpu issues. Hardware does not glitch or overload... Hardware synth X has a certain amount of polyphony and it is known and certain. Hardware has advantages for live performance.

I don't know your level of skill or experience, but listening to the music you posted, the main thing is composition and sound design skill. Klaus Schulze has a lot of experience and a subtle ear.

Give him any 3-4 of todays top softsynths, and he would make something beautiful. Diva, Synth Squad, Dune2 and Alchemy would be one excellent combo.

"Stratosfear" 1976 - I love the analog sequencers/synths on the title track. They really roll.

But then again, Giorgio Moroder's sequenced Moogs on Donna Summers' "I Feel Love" are probably the best analog sequencers ever sounded.
