Good VSTs for making music similar to Klaus Schulze, TD etc.?

What are your preferred KS's albums or period?
Because there are a lot difference of synthesizers used following his albums.
Everything from 'Irrlicht' to 'X' (including his 'erotic movie' soundtracks) .
Moondawn (track 2, with the 'thunder'), Totem (track 2), Mirage
Live (1980)
Dig It, Audentity (esp.the more atmospheric tracks), Dune
Dreams, En=Trance, Beyond Recall
In Blue
Are you sequenced (esp. the 'down tempo' tracks!)
Kontinuum (a nod to Mirage)

Hi,
I see that some of you know KS's music very well...
My preferred albums which are inspired me for my dream, my music and my VSTs:
1973 Cyborg
1974 Blackdance
1975 Picture Music: Crumar organ + Synthi or VSC3
1975 Timewind: very romantic.
1976 Moondawn: Solo, S&H and drums, yes!
1977 Body Love (Soundtrack) : I didn't see the film but the music = Star War.
1977 Mirage: it's one of my preferred, all is here, the sequences are like the stars.
1977 Body Love Vol. 2: wao again.
1978 "X", Moog + string orchestra of Berlin, acoustic drums with Harald Grobkopf... one of the best of romantic KS's albums!
1979 Dune with Wolfgang Tiepold (cello), ooops I'm flying in the galaxy and "Shadows of ignorance" it is like an electronic reggae with the voice of Arthur brown.
1980 ...Live... (Live): sound live crappy but you must listen it! A pure good feeling specially to read Dune of F. Herbert.
1980 Dig it: first album digitaly recorded on GDS computer.
1981 Trancefer: very similar of Dig it
1983 Audentity: a perfect mix between the digital and analog!
1983 Dziekuje Poland Live 1983 (Live): the live of Audentity.
1984 Angst (Soundtrack)
1986 Dreams
*************
The "Wahnfried" Albums with flollowing the title:
Mike Shrieve, Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane, Steve Jollife, Manual Göttshing
Karl Wahnfried...
1979 Time Actor: must have!
CS80+CP70+Honner+KORG PS3300+all Moog+ARP+Synthi+Mellotron
1981 Tonwelle: with Manual Götteshing.
1986 Miditation: Very good tracks with CS80 and solo flute
*************
1993 Silver Edition: Mysterious tapes (concerts)
*************
1986 Transfer station blue of Mikael Shrive with KS on the keyboards.
etc...

Yes, but they also used the Synclavier on Exit (the starting sound and the beat-it sound in kiew mission are synclavier presets).Ingonator wrote:This is one of my favorite tracks from TD and they seemed to use the PPG Wave 2.2/2.3 a lot (or mostly) in the whole Exit album:

I saw somewhere that he used a wall of Nord Leads and yes, he made some presets for Arturia synth. So I would point in this direction (Arturia Minimoog or Diva, Arturia Modular). But Afaik he used this modular Moog synth more in the early days in some of the later videos it's more typical stuff. I don't see there some very special synth.
Schulze is IMO also not such a big sound designer and only a mediocre piano/keyboard player. He shines more with his sequencing stuff and this can be done with every (not too digital sounding) synth (emulation). Diva, Dune, Arturia synth, Tone2 Saurus, Xils... IMO not so much with Spire, Sylenth, Massive...

This is interesting. Exit is one of my faves. I was just working on something inspired by the driving groove of Network 23.Chris-S wrote:Yes, but they also used the Synclavier on Exit (the starting sound and the beat-it sound in kiew mission are synclavier presets).Ingonator wrote:This is one of my favorite tracks from TD and they seemed to use the PPG Wave 2.2/2.3 a lot (or mostly) in the whole Exit album:

Must have seen the whole "concert" on German TV back in 1977 , I loved all the wires
Like his X and bodylove 2 the best , I always felt sorry for the drummer, Klaus was just sitting on that dead animal, and the drummer was working hard and sweating like a pig.
This song was 5 minutes long on the album when I bought it :

For me, Moondawn is the one I find romantic!
BTW. I really like your music too, Xavier! Reminded me a bit of Mirage - Crystal Lake & Kontinuum!
Q. What does 'wao' mean?

Are you claiming the Arturia Moog Modular V isn't a "pro sound" .. whatever that means?carrieres wrote:I was at the tangerine dream live in Paris this year and was surprised to see a screen with the Moog modular from arturia

I've got Modular V. It sounds GREAT!!! And I haven't found a review that says otherwise.
I had intended to recommend a couple VST's to the OP when I found this comment. <facepalm>
Anyhow, VST's for such sounds:
Arturia Moog Modular V
Glenn Stegner's Arp 2600VA (or Arturia's Arp 2600V) .. Glenn's is free: http://glenstegner.com/softsynths.html
KX77Free synths. Several semi-modulars and one fully modular that sound awesome. and they're free: http://kx77free.free.fr/English-page-vst.html
HG Fortune has a variety of free VST's that are made for "spacey" sounds. Sound quality is decent enough : http://www.hgf-synthesizer.com/nfg---pro-vsti-free.html
That's it from me, for now. Interesting thread. .. I love this type of music. It strongly influences what I make.

I also use AAS UltraAnalog2 for some of these kinda sounds too.
Got some good initial presets with it that are good starting points.

see/hear:
at 6:40 and 18:18.
The story is: Michael Jackson owned this NED demo disc and liked the sound a lot, so he decided to use it for Beat-It.
