Check. Well, I haven't created any libraries in Kontakt, so I'm not sure what it does. All I know is what I see from the libraries I buy. I created a library in Sample Tank though. But again, that was version 2.55. Until my copy of version 3 arrives, I can't speak to what it will do when creating libraries. (And at this point, I'm not aware of a Sample Tank Free "player" for version 3. It took years for IK Multimedia to release a "player" for Sample Tank 2.5.)

As long as you're listing criteria for this sample player, you might want to specify if it needs to be 32-bit or 64-bit, or if that even matters. That may limit your choices.

Pretty much anything really, 32-bit/64-bit, Win32/Mac.

The SFZ file format is not that hard to master...
Is this the one that handles old DLS midi flies too? I've seen this one mentioned a couple times now.

MIDI flies? O-o

Err the windows stock GM midi dls soundfont. I swear I'm not crazy...

Crap. Im feeling dyslexic...

Hm. So SFZ is now a fly-swatting format...

The SFZ VSTI plugin could load DLS files, yes, though it's a tad of a useless extra as there's not much good stuff in DLS format in particular...

Please try to keep a straight head.

SFZ format is a text file describing how to play a bunch of samples. It is NOTHING ELSE and never has been and never will be.

Sample players can support SFZ format as well as other formats.

For example, you could have Kontakt Player loading SFZ format files. Oh, it does. That does not mean SFZ format now does Kontakt.

Plogue Sforzando is another sample player, a bit like Kontakt Player. It loads SFZ format files (a lot better than Kontakt ever will). It doesn't load Kontakt files, though. It does, however, load SF2 and other formats. Doesn't affect what SFZ is, though.

Also, SFZ format doesn't really achieve OP's goal:
Seidhepriest wrote:The sampler itself has to have its own container format (preferrably with non-extractable samples) and it has to be capable of creating files in its own format with no silly limitations like locked edit controls unless the full version is bought.
It isn't a container format, the samples a in "free" formats, it isn't a GUI editor. So it fails on three requested points.

Aren't all file formats containers? .zip .exe

Post

Oh SFZ vs sf2 okay

Container: *.wav samples and instrument definition files in one container file - such as .kt? - in the case of Kontakt.
Non-container: *.wav samples, instrument definition, and other files strewn about in a directory.

The samples would ideally be difficult or impossible to extract from the container (as is the case with Kontakt methinks).

Maybe if we knew what you were trying to do here, we could give you a better idea of what would work for you.

That. What's needed is a VST/AU sampler which can load container files with everything inside them: instrument definitions, libraries, samples. Nothing external. Something like Reason's NN-XT, which has a self-contained file option.

This is for a commercial sampled instrument, so the sampler player itself best be free (not necessarily the tools to make self-contained instrument files) and free of any annoyances to the end user, like software key locks, demo timeouts, locked controls, etc.

Ok, so you're actually creating the sampled instrument, and you're looking for a player that meets those requirements, I take it.

I have all of the free players available for the top library formats. Only SampleTank 2.55 offers a "player" that is actually the same as the ROMpler and offers options you can't get from SFZ players or standard samplers. There are no plans for a free player for SampleTank 3 at the moment.

One word (well, several, actually) of advice: if you're going to sell this library, you might be better off making it for whichever player is most commonly used. Currently, that's probably Kontakt 4 or 5. (Kontakt is also cross-platform, which greatly expands your pool of potential customers.)

We've suggested many of the most popular ROMplers/players here already: Kontakt, UVI Workstation/Mach 5, SampleTank, Plogue/SFZ file readers, etc. There are a few more, but they're not as widely used. You might want to take a look at other sample library developers to see which formats they develop for. You'll probably see the same three or four names on every list, for good reason.

I'll be interested to see if there really is something that matches your criteria (and I honestly hope there is). But developing a ROMpler and a library and effectively giving away the ROMpler (in the form of a free library player) while also not charging library developers a "license fee" to develop for that proprietary library is not a great business model. Only Kontakt comes close AFAIK, and if you don't pay NI the license fee, your library only works for 15 minutes at a time in the Kontakt player.

If you want a comprehensive, free player that loads self-contained files in a proprietary format (so the .WAV sample files can't be stolen) and you're going to develop your library for that, you might find a relatively small pool of potential customers.

So the Kontakt Player can have working controls and everything inside the Player given that NI gets a licence fee?

Basically then NI has got it down to this: either the customer buys Kontakt 5 full version and can load any kind of instruments, or he downloads the Kontakt 5 Player and as long as the instrument he bought has a paid NI licence, it can be used with no limitations - is that right?

Sample Tank 2.55 might be it, it really depends on features, and there's no point whatsoever to getting the latest bloat with unnecessary features, both for the developer and the customer...
