I am working on an album of my own material that has collected over the years. I am performing bass, guitar, trumpet, vocals and mandolin by myself, and doing drums and keyboards with software.

I'm curious, how do other bedroom musicians work? Do you record each instrument for all of the songs, and build up an album by doing individual instruments for each song, or do you work with one song, doing all the tracks and finishing a song before going on to the next? it seems that there are advantages and disadvantages for both strategies. If I record ten mandolin tracks for ten songs, then I really build up my mandolin chops. Then again, I also lose consistent practice on the other skills I need to maintain.

One track at a time. But then, I don't have a consistent set of instruments between tracks. Mostly it's all in the box, and anything that isn't, I record lines (or just sample it) as I need it.
