That is like choosing a firing squad over the electric chair... both suck and the end result is the same.

So is Basic a Capitalist or Communist synth?
Or am i getting confused here :hihi:

Or, it's like choosing Labour or Conservative :hihi: A false choice :dog:

As for the synth (which is called Basic, in case anyone's forgotten), I think it's filters are great. The oscillators and modulation are OK (sync can be a bit gnarly/aliased). Combined with the built-in "dirt" parameter, it can have a really nice tone to it, and it's quick to use.

I'm genuinely sure there's not a whole lot else to be said about it. That, combined with the audio demos, should tell you if you want it. I probably wouldn't have paid full price for it, to be honest, and probably wouldn't have bought it at all, if I wasn't really into AD's other plugins.

Looks a bit too simple for my tastes.

No, I'm one of the people who sees a creative diversity in the world... You apparently are one of those who sees only two possibilities... black and white :P

I had a quick squizz at it as well and felt the same, then again, I guess that's the point. It's a "first steps" into synthesis sort of synth. Servers the purpose I guess.

No one has mentioned the modulation visualisation; it's not just eye candy, it's a good way to see the modulation amounts each modulator is adding. I'm not sure there is an equivalence in some of the freeware alternatives people are suggesting?

Remember, it's supposed to be a tool for learning!

It's called "Basic", and it's supposed to be basic. I'm sure AD wouldn't bring a product to market (and according to the analog industries blog, spend a good part of a year working on it) if they didn't believe there was a niche audience for it - like all of their other products. I'm sure crandall's not looking to retire on the revenue stream it generates.

The blog also makes reference to their increasing hardware portfolio. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is one of the last plugins they release.

Me too, but you can see the way it's heading.

They're removing DRM because it's the bulk of their support work. This also makes the product super easy to pirate = potential for less revenue from plugins.

They've made a name for themselves in the plugin arena, and are now applying their DSP knowledge to a different market, where the product can't easily be pirated or acquired at zero cost - hardware. This is going quite well for them it seems.

Faced with the choice, I know where I'd spend my R&D dollars.

Can those that bought it share some more insight now that they have had time playing with it for a couple of weeks?

What is good, and what is bad?

I see the logic but what's the market for eurorack modules? Few thousand racks worldwide maybe? (I genuinely have no idea. :)) Would selling a few hundred units (guessing again...) be more profitable than the thousands of plugs they must sell?
