I avoid dongles, not because I have any problem with them, but because on a 2013 iMac 27" I only have 4 native USB3 ports. One for the interface, one for the MIDI controller, only two left and there's usually quite a round robin of things vying to use the space.

Quite like the iLok and eLicenser solutions, although I haven't had to test them in anger [e.g. computer reboot, new machine etc]. NI's service centre has always been trouble free for me as well.

So, on a desktop computer, where you have no portability issues at all, you didn't think "oh I could use a usb hub for my dongles?"

I have no need, really. Komplete and Spectrasonics keep me out of trouble these days. I have enough USB ports for my needs, and the arbitrary limit keeps my wallet safer.

I might relent if a TB-USB3 hub ever came about, though.

So then, the number of ports limitation isn't really a limitation at all on a desktop computer then, right?

Sure, I just wanted to point out that even you didn't believe what you wrote earlier.

So, it's not because you only have four ports or that you don't know what a USB hub is, rather, it's some other reason?

Sounds to me like the reason is simply that you don't have a need/want for anything with a dongle and so your strongly worded position isn't really such a position at all; rather, it just sounds like a good way to describe your current status quo in a way to make you seem cool, or something like that, yes?

At the very least, it seems like an exaggerated effort to align yourself with the KVR groupthink.

There is no way to win if you are a gear ho. You'll have to suffer. I haven't had the horrible issues some have had. Have a tendency to be a little happier with keyfiles vs C/R.

That's a lot of psychology! Can't help but feel there's some fishing for a dongle argument here. Truth is, I really don't care enough about it to hold any position, let alone a strongly worded one. If something I really wanted has a dongle, I'll maybe get it, but it'll knowingly bugger up the zen calm ninja feng shui of my workspace. Right now, I neither want nor need more toys.

As for KVR groupthink, I'm not sure I've ever aligned in the last 10 years and probably won't for the next 10. I'm too old to worry about appearing cool. Hell, all that's left for me is beige clothing and prostate problems...

If it really matters that I hold some kind of a position, my sig from around 2005-2008 was something like 'I have no problem with dongles, but I will not buy any synth that makes me pay extra for them'. This was in response to my Arturia Moog Modular, which lovingly included a dongle in the box and I was suitably impressed. Come to think of it, Nexus had one and I still have a KLC and a Reaktor 3 one in a drawer somewhere....

Absolutely, yes.

I would have bought Halion Sonic 2 recently if it didnt use elicenser.
I dont go anywhere near UVI stuff because of PACE.

I dont even install freebies that require installing a license manager. (fxpansion, soundtoys, waves)

the only one that gets a free pass is NI and thats solely due Komplete+Maschine.
(ironically, probably the most commonly pirated system.

)

Serials or key files are what I prefer. Dongles are ok , but |I'd rather not to have them.
I don't like c/r at all and am avoiding anything else that uses it.

If the c/r is set up properly where it's only required once for activation (like windows) and doesn't require constant internet access for verification (like cloud computing) Then that's the best solution for me.

I've never done the dongle thing. My boss who had 30 plus years in the software development business laughs that people would use such an archaic system.

I finally got an ilok late last year, so now I have no issue with whichever CP a developer chooses, I'm gonna buy the best audio tool for my audio.
I'm running a heap of cool audio gear on an early 2008 Mac without problems, so I don't really buy the whole CP is ruining my machine arguments either. Got no doubt people have computer probs, just don't think they are entirely CP related.

I think a developer has the right to select the CP appropriate for them, just as they have the right to make their instrument look the way they want and have the feature set they choose.
This seems to be something some people can't accept, at least not without shouting to the world they are not buying plugin X because it's not their favourite colour!
