After posting my tripe and having people like the x50 over the revalver I'm really rethinking this. Oh god, the constant a/b'ing ... I'm hopeless!
I compared R4 to LePou SoloC Fullstack, Grindmachine, Headcase, Emissary entered in
2014 Developers Dhallenge, Fender SuperSonic and Metalheads
from both Fender Fuse, and Amplitube, and couldn't hear R4 being superior enough,
to inspire purchase. The gui function is nice in use, the wide array of artwork
is interesting :? The a/b'ing is often cost effective.
Cheers

What i really like about R4 is the Input Shaper feature. I think about spending a few bucks on it. Instant acoustic guitar with headphones isn't bad.

What exactly is that (says LazyMan)? EQ before the amp? Not exactly a unique feature if so.

Post

It's the "ACT" feature which appears right next to the tuner after pressing the "Input" button on top.

edit: after reading your post again...I don't know how it works, but it works. I'm a lazy guy as you mentioned. :D

I'm sure it's crystal clear in use, but I haven't had a chance to actually install R4 or read the manual. That's why I was asking. (But I am also lazy. Sort of.)

Post

Sorry, what's crystal clear? I'm just a simple user. Made crystal clear by EQ? My english is too bad.

Post

Sorry to be unclear, using English slang. "Crystal clear" means very clear, understandable.

All I meant was that you were quite reasonably pointing out where that feature was in R4, but I was trying to understand what its function was, without having looked at it or played through it, which I haven't had a chance to do.

The lesson I learned today, that those crazy steep cuts come from the speaker + mic combo so it isn't some sort of truncation caused by youtube or converting it to an mp3. The Bluesmaker JTM45 Dry preset gets you very close to the basic EQ curve of the Shoot to Thrill guitars. Replace the mic with the R121, set the proximity control to about -2 (to match the bass roll-off to some degree), untoggle off-axis and turn the high frequency filter way way up in RIR2 (to approximate the high frequency energy between 7-10k). In the output mixer I added another 6db at 1.5kish and 8db at 7.7kish (probably should be a little higher, closer to 9k).

To get much closer to the curve you would need a setting between on and off axis and more mic positions to choose from near the center of the cone.

Green is ACDC, red is my approximation in Revalver 4:

Ok, understood. :) The function is you play some strat an it gives out an acoustic guitar or a humbucker guitar or a tele or whatever.
i don't think it's just an EQ because there's some body resonance involved while playing the acoustic guitar "presets" in the free version which I've been using yet. But as long as hiss is rising I guess there's also an EQ involved. A pretty old freeware plugin called "DeepBoard" results into similar results, but R4 is easier to handle. I'm also lazy as you remeber. And this works really fine in R4. I don't care too much about the amps.

Removing it has caused me a great deal of grief in trying to get my USB keyboard to be found on boot up now.

well, the thing is, i don't *want* to use the post-EQ section. i'm used to using EQ only for corrective purposes, not for tone shaping. for that i usually use an amp, cab and mic position. and it works with every amp sim i have, aside from Revalver. i dunno why, maybe it's because the tonestacks in Revalver suck, maybe it's just so different than everything else, or so realistic that any experience i have with "fake" ampsims doesn't work here, but i can't get even close to what i want to hear if i'm after that kind of tone. again, not so with Amplitube and just about anything else (Creme? Ignite Amps, LePou stuff?) i have. even S-Gear can do that with Wayfarer.
My favorite Mesa emulation was the one on the first generation POD. (I guess it doesn't sound or act like a real one.) Sometimes you need to find the sound you want without looking at the brand on the front.

Truthfully, I still like the way Revalver III.V was set up. It seems like I just had more control over everything. I also like the original RIR loader, and use that all the time, even with competitor's amps. :D
Remember the iLokalypse Summer 2013

At Greg: I agree about the bluesmaker being able to come closeish.
