For those who saw this thread, I am probably going for an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MoBo + XP 2600+ CPU. A couple of questions as I think long term (2 years or so).

This has a built in SATA controller. Does anyone run EIDE + SATA combinations (is it possible?). I have two IDE drives right now, and was thinking of moving my music to a SATA RAID if that will work. I have set up RAIDs before but all of those were a few years ago on DEC Alpha's

. SATA drives are rather cheap these days and there are a whole bunch available.

Probably will end up buying some memory also

Don't waste your time or money on RAID unless you plan on doing video.

You can run IDE and SATA at the same time. I would not use RAID for music. You can become in big troubles with some software. Logic, Protools and Sonar have troubles with RAID.

SATA 150 with 7200rpm drive will give you over 900 tracks with good software

If your motherboard can take this please tell me. I will want to give you a medal

I think to buy IDE usb and firewire case. You can then move this to other computers

The speed is much more than you need for music.

If you buy memory please do not buy cheap

Crucial and Kingston give you quality and age. The money extra saves you a brain baby later and more money

I have two options. External USB drive for back ups or SATA. Since I don't plan on writing any simulations code on this machine, I will stay away from SATA.

Memory .. Kingston has always been good for me

Right now I am running Kingston pc2100 DDR, but of course that's kinda dated now

Also, don't bother with RAID unless you're getting a quality external controller with a XOR chip.

You don't wanna lose precious CPU cycles for shuffling HD data, and the added speed is such a bliss. Simple things like saving large wave files will be but a finger snap.

Since RAID does not seem like something I am going to do prehaps a A7N8X-X, instead of a Deluxe would be better. They are much the same, minus the SATA and a WiFi slot.

Well, SATA doesn't automatically mean RAID, it just seems that they're always bundled together nowadays.

SATA is the new IDE and hence pretty much futureproof. I can't remember the exact benefits, xept for the thin cables. But it definetely added somehing, especially when running multiple HD (RAID or not) on the same SATA channel.

Not possible. SATA is single device only per channel.

SATA can handle bigger data flow on same channel.

I would get the Deluxe. I think soon many hard drives will be SATA. This is the future, and I think you should be ready for it

SATA is the new type of interface but 2day is just the early stages of it. Not much performance added. In fact, some ATA100 HDDs (like the JB series from WD) are faster than SATA ones

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon xp2600+
a gig of Kingston memory.

That's an upgrade I ws planning to make at the end of the year anyway!!

no point in getting the 2600+ go for the 3200+

it's only an extra 50% ish
