Giving this a bump in case anyone wants to download the final. I ended up rolling off some low bass and actually was able to get a little more volume overall. Result: Louder volume and less distortion on my car stereo. I also applied some eq to various tracks and allowed the guitar to come through better. FWIW...

Things to Remember - Final Mix

This is a Willie Nelson cover. The song is called "Things to Remember" and it's on his Crazy: The Demo Sessions CD. I took quite a bit of liberty with the music, but stayed true to the lyric, which I think is quite cool.

What I already know: There's too much bass.
What I suspect: The vocal is too loud.

I did play the piano part, but I had to wiggle a few notes into place with quantize. I wish my timing was that tight.

Sounds pretty darn good from here.

Vocals are fine. I love the rhodes at the beginning... and the piano solo... oh and the drums are great... and the bass is solid... ahhh f**k it ... I love it all!

Actually the only thing I'd change is the ending ... it ends to quickly...

Wow this is nice.
Lovely song and played very good.

One thing is a bit strange to my ears.
Drums are panned in the center but the crash cymbal is panned copletely right side. It does not disturb me but
it sounds like a second player playing the crash a few meters right to the drummer.

Never mind,

I hope I will ever be able to create something with that quality.

Thanks 23 and Glooper. Glooper, I was actually thinking of you this morning when I laid down the guitar part. There's a strat sounding part in there that's mixed really low for a reason. I need to go to your site and download some solid guitar loops. Or just practice more.

Everything else is Sampletank 2 Sounds (I love the drumkit - it's called "Sixties" and it's quite retro).

I thought about writing a new verse or bridge, but decided to stay true to Willie's words. His track actually comes in under 2 minutes on the CD.

Thanks a lot! I would love to hear from someone who knows or has heard the original. It's not really recognizable besides the words (though the chord changes are similar, just went major to minor for the most part), but they are great words.

Nothing less than I expected. Pretty darn good that is. I don't think there's too much bass (well, maybe a tad), same goes for the vocals, they're just right.

Personally, I would eventually have stayed with the E-Piano instead of switching to the real deal. But that might be my taste only.

Anyways, the things I like most are your contest entries - especially this months one and the april one.

Thanks for the feedback and good vibes, Sascha. My litmus test is my crummy car stereo, so when I listened to the track on the way to work today, I noticed the speaker breaking up and that always tells me the low end is a little too strong.

I don't know the original but i love this version...

I enjoyed it a lot.

There is someting in your voice and in the way you sing that is very moving...

I listened to it with my headphones AKG K240M.
There are lots of bass but i like a lot how it sounds.
I agree with the vocal a bit to loud in the first part. In the second part there are more instruments and it sounds good.

Amazing! As I was reading the posts, I was getting a pre-conceived notion of what it might sound like, and then when the uptempo drums came through the speakers, it was NOT what I had been imagining!

Then I started to worry-- only a 2 minute track, and the lyrics don't start until 30 seconds in... will the track feel 'complete'?

The answer is yes! And once the singing started, I realized how perfect the tempo and drum were. I might never have noticed had someone not mentioned it, but having the e-piano throughout the track would be cool, too... or switch to real piano ONLY for the 'solo'. But.. well.. I wouldn't have noticed if someone hadn't pointed it out, and I'm sure that coloured the way I listened to it. The way it IS is great, too.

Vocals are the right level. You already know about the bass.

Very good track!
