I've tried it once but wasn't proud of the album I released

But is this the best way?

It depends. If you already have a big fanbase and a lot of potential buyers CDBaby is a good option for self-marketing. CDBaby has not so many stores (Afaik Beatport is not included), so if this is important I would think about a different aggregator (eg. Mondotunes).
