NI Pianos suck ass. Can't get a thick sound out of them. I think NI Akoustic Pianos used to be good, with actual names. But they screwed up after that. I tweaked them to sound fatter.

Now all this Berlin grand this and that just sounds thin. Doesn't cut through the mix at all. I'm better off sticking with gigastudio's pianos, as painful as it is to use.

The Komplete 9 Pianos (Berlin, New York etc.) are the same exact pianos from Akoustic Piano. Same samples, same engine. They just changed the names.

And locked down the samples in an NKI. The Akousik pianos shipped as wavs. In case anyone cares.

They sound fine to me, I have more pianos than I care about so I don't care about anything new.

My standards aren't all that high when it comes to piano libraries. I'm probably still traumatized from the days of the Korg M1, or (gasp!) Emax samples. NI sounds pretty damned good by comparison, and that's plenty for me. If I want something realistic, I do have an actual Steinway grand at my disposal, as well as a Baldwin Spinet. I just want to know what those stupid, vague names actually represent.

I'm looking forward to K10U.
But it's not the pianos that make it worth the price for me.
I still find the ones in 9 to be limited for anything more than an occasional strike as a percussion instrument. I don't expect that to really change just because there's more added to 10.

I'll still probably get my pianos elsewhere.

As bad as the M1 pianos were, they weren't Mirage pianos, FM pianos, or worse, analog pianos. I hear you, anything reasonably new and multisampled sounds fine to my tin ears.

Wouldn't surprise me. I had to tweak the Akoustic pianos to cut through the mix, and after all that was done they sounded decent. I used my own patch ever since.

When the new pianos came through the new Komplete it felt like a step down, so I never bothered to use them.

Does anyone have a secret decoder ring to translate the cryptic names of the new pianos into the real makes and models? This "please don't sue us" name game must work for Native Instruments, but its damn annoying for anyone who wants to use their products. Do I want to play The Maverick or The Grandeur? Who knows!

Is it the old pianos renamed, perhaps?

I think this thread needs a post on every single page that says "the 3 pianos are all new and made by Galaxy Instruments" and "no, you don't need to buy a Kontrol Keyboard to use the Komplete Browser".

Sorry to burst this page-long clever clever cynical bubble with an inconvenient fact. The old Akoustik Pianos - rebadged as the Berlier etc - have been widely ignored for years, and have now finally been retired. Galaxy have a good reputation for pianos (I don't own one, mind), and their page with more demos on their three brand new ones is here - http://www.galaxypianos.com/definitive- ... ction.html . Although we don't know the models, there's a classic orchestral grand, a more idiosyncratic softer grand (jazz etc) and an upright. Alicia's Keys in Ultimate is a great piano for general purpose pop etc, btw. IMO.

There are many dozens of high quality pianos on the market now, and of course some will prefer some over others. These look and sound like perfectly decent contenders to me, and support re-pedalling etc. Blanket statements like "all NI pianos suck for all eternity" are not especially convincing or helpful.

I'd be staggered if they were the same. The sound is different, the features are different, the number of velocities different, the stated age of instruments and other details different. And their other pianos are still available under their own names.

NI have had decent pianos for sometime already with Alicia's Keys and the Giant, but people are still only remembering the older Akoustik pianos when they think about NI's pianos.

My assessment is really only about the Giant and AK. IMO; Decent enough for a quick phrase or other percussive effect, but not that good for delivering an all out piano for the center of the mix.
Those other pianos, I'm sure are nice for something too, just not when I've needed a piano.

But K10U is offering so much more for the upgrade price, I can easily overlook these particular instruments as an 'it came with the package' and not have to be overly concerned about it.

I wonder if that means it will be like razor. They realize they have a popular product and so that one remains firmly in the U category only. Or maybe in a few releases it would get moved to non-U?
