If you would not borrow something (ideas, sounds or whatever) from another genre, why listen to it?
Of course I know what other genres sound like. I know what opera sounds like, but I dislike it and thus avoid it. Same goes for most other genres.

depends on how much imagination you have, I guess. those with less might merely borrow, those with more however, might find inspiration.fluffy_little_something wrote:If you would not borrow something (ideas, sounds or whatever) from another genre, why listen to it?

Again, it is my opinion (and as such just as legitimate as yours) that it makes no sense to suggest listening to other genres. After all, he didn't say he makes electronic music, but very specifically deep house... With imagination one can come up with something new within that, or any other, genre. If he really likes his genre, it can amount to torture having to listen to other genres

Beats me. I cant see anyone presenting any kind of intolerance or conformance to someone else's ideas of what people should do in this thread at all.fluffy_little_something wrote:I am wondering where that intolerant peer pressure and thought police mentality on this board comes from...

I am not so sure it helps recommending him to listen to other genres.
the op will will come to the same realization that we all did, and will have some similar advice we all gave him for someone else who similarly wont really get it.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

What is intolerant about quoting examples, in this case myself (and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks that way, see mrblitz's quote later)? "I am not so sure..." leaves a whole lot of room for opposing views. Nor did I write that just like that. It just was a response to your statements. Being inspired is also borrowing, you borrow ideas or whatever from what inspires you. Borrowing is not limited to "stealing" a specific sound or melody or whatever.whyterabbyt wrote:Beats me. Now, when you reply "but we're not concerned with you, we're talking about the OP, remember?", that amounts to saying your opinion doesn't matter. Then again, we are not concerned with you, either, so why do you think your opinion is any more valid than mine?! That is what I meant, I have seen it in other threads before. When I was younger I always thought of people in the world of music as very tolerant, but that is not the case as I have found out on KVR after a while.
There is no standard view on this, suggesting listening to other genres is more of a knee-jerk advice in my view because it is much easier than to come up with specific ways to develop his own style within his genre and from within his own mind and creativity. Of course listening to other music CAN give you ideas, but it doesn't have to. It is no recipe or best practice.
And unless he has no radio or TV, he probably can't help but occasionally listen to other music anyway, even if not voluntarily. Happens to me as well, sometimes I am just too lazy to get up and turn off the radio just because they are playing a rock song
Basically, I agree with Michael Schenker as quoted by mrblitz.
One source of inspiration (more general, though, not specific to genres) I have come across accidentally in the shower is listening to one's favorite music, but applying severe filtering of entire frequency bands. I noticed that although I know every song on my playlist inside out, I hardly recognize them when I am taking a shower while listening to them. They often sound like different songs I have never heard before, and I try to remember the new melodies until I get out of the shower

So what are you claiming is 'intolerant peer pressure' in the thread, then? What I quoted was the only examples in the thread of anyone actually dismissing anyone else's advice for the OP.fluffy_little_something wrote:What is intolerant about quoting examples, in this case myself (and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks that way, see mrblitz's quote later)? Cant have been; I didnt make any statements, I only asked questions, up until I replied to your question about 'inspiration'.Nor did I write that just like that. It just was a response to your statements.
You're trying to tell me what I meant? That's silly. And you're categorically wrong. Now, when you reply "but we're not concerned with you, we're talking about the OP, remember?", that amounts to saying your opinion doesn't matter.
It merely meant that whatever reason you have for your opinion, that reason wont necessarily apply to the OP. That surely isnt hard?
I mean, this was only me askingwhy you would state that someone else's shouldnt have given the opinion that the OP listen to other kinds of music.
If anyone said 'your opinion doesnt matter' it was you, all I did was ask why you would say that.
Again you're telling me what I think. Please stop that, you're not very good at it. Its very 'thought police' to tell some what they think or mean and then criticise them for it.Then again, we are not concerned with you, either, so why do you think your opinion is any more valid than mine?!
Unless I specifically state something, you dont get to claim that I think it, okay?
That's kind of interesting when you're the only one who's actually said anything like 'no dont listen to that opinion' here. When I was younger I always thought of people in the world of music as very tolerant, but that is not the case as I have found out on KVR after a while.
Is that the kind of intolerant you mean, or is it different?
Well, you use the term 'kneejerk' rather pejoratively, which is somewhat intolerant of it as advice, IMO. Of course, noone said it was 'best practice', but there you go.There is no standard view on this, suggesting listening to other genres is more of a knee-jerk advice in my view because it is much easier than to come up with specific ways to develop his own style within his genre and from within his own mind and creativity. Of course listening to other music CAN give you ideas, but it doesn't have to. It is no recipe or best practice.
What, to not listen to any other music at all? Seems extreme. Im sure there are plenty of other known musicians with the opposite view, even in the deep house subgenre.Basically, I agree with Michael Schenker as quoted by mrblitz.

I was not dismissing anything or telling anyone what to do. What I said was "I am not so sure it helps recommending him to listen to other genres." So, I did not say he should not listen to other genres, I merely said that I doubt listening to other genres is good advice. That's quite different. I would never tell him what to do or not to do. Who am I?whyterabbyt wrote:So what are you claiming...
I am not telling you what you think, you wrote what you wrote and it is for everyone to see.
Of course the reasons I have for my opinion don't have to apply to others, I never claimed that anywhere. But I can't rule out that they apply to others, either, actually, I do think they might apply to others as well. There are simply different approaches, something may work great for person x, but not at all for person y.
Why don't we wait for that guy to tell us whether he likes to listen to other genres. If he has done so in the past it obviously did not help him. So one might conclude that either he has not listened to other genres before or that it doesn't help the way some people say it would.
Have to go and buy groceries, see you later

Do what all the pros do. Use "Deluxe StyleMaker Pro - Deep House Edition." After selecting a few options, it generates Ableton templates in your own personal style. It's a huge time saver and lets you focus on the more important aspects of style: haircuts and sunglasses.

Now come on, there was never any "genius", just because someone was capable. It only looks that way because people don't know who they are.
