No, he's wrong, it has just evolved into something he no longer approves of.

Is rock POPULAR... no. Not as much as it used to be. Same with jazz. Classical. Gregorian chant. It's all still valid. It can still be slightly twisted to sound "new."

perhaps after reading the article it should read "the business of rock is dead". As long as I can listen to music rock will never be dead for me. It's funny how people always have to put a $ on success, because not as many people are making money does not mean people are not enjoying the music.
I feel very sad for the artist that has painted themselves into such corners, without a huge payday they cannot enjoy their talents? Jeez Gene, maybe it wasn't the music that was your passion

The thing is, in the past people released albums and CD's, where maybe 10% of the songs were good, yet you had to pay for the 90% crap as well. Now that is no longer the case, people buy the songs they like. But those people who really make an effort to release a dozen good songs on a CD will still sell CD's, even online (after all, one can buy entire CD's online as well, it is cheaper per track than buying individual tracks).

Besides....when was "making a living" as a guitarist EVER a legitimate profession? I see music, including rock, as simply expanding to include more genres, styles, etc.

If his point is that illegal music downloads are killing great music (e.g. new, original acts are not being recognized/sponsored/or helped to succeed) then I have to at least partially agree with that. As a business, I think music has suffered greatly, for many reasons; file-sharing is just one of this sordid industries' many problems.
