I don't care. Most of it holds no interest to me except for slight annoyance, which isn't really a selling point.

Perhaps the larger issue isn't illegal file sharing, but in the internet in general opening the market to any and all acts.. not just big vs small but most/all genres are available to anyone with an internet connection.

It used to be where the market was defined by what played on the radio.. you had a rock station, a pop station, maybe a classical/news station, a hiphop/rap station, a country station... etc just specific genres represented.

IF you wanted to listen to neofunk soulshine (made that up) genre music well you had to know about it before hand and find a place mail order or a connected record shop to import it..

Today you just go to google and type in 'neofunk soulshine' and voila you're there.

So the market is both more accessible as well as broad.

Further, now anyone can create and release songs.. before you needed a fairly decent budget or to know someone to get you into a studio to record.

I don't think rock genre music is dead.. just the mechanism on which it was bought and sold has changed. And that goes for all music.. not just rock.

I want to rock and roll all night, and hut hut hike all day. You dont get any more rock n roll than football. Well, maybe a Metallica Pong team would be pretty brutal.

Well anyways, he said rock n roll is dead, so im off to burn my guitars and amps, maybe sell them, and buy season tickets for LAKISS.

If you click on the link in the RS article, you will see the Esquire piece where Gene made his proclamations was penned by his own son, Nick. I think it is sweet that Gene is making an ass of himself for someone other than himself, for once.

I would like to add that I think that what is "killing" the music scene today is endless, bad taste imitations of past successful formulas for money making (MTV style).
For example during the late '80s/early '90s I used to listen to a lot of Alternative Rock (among other genres), when it was a real alternative scene. Nowadays I got sick of it, I just can't stand it, Alternative Rock is no alternative to anything, it has become mainstream. Also I hate its undefined, constant guitar sound (without any spaces between the chords) -- whatever happened to the guitar riff??? A good rock song must have a good guitar riff!

Don`t care who sez it. The music scene as it once was is gone. There is practically zero jazz scene in the US anymore, and I can`t remember the last time I saw a rock or jazz club large enough to hold a good size audience.
Simmons is right when he sez trained, practiced players can`t find gigs anymore to support playing on the road. The only work is behind the scenes....and that ain`t the scene.

There are many changes that have taken place over the past decade or more that are causal to the decline of the musical instrument scene. Music stores by the tens of dozens closed over-night. CD stores are all but a few, closed down.
For those teenagers who would otherwise have taken up a rock or jazz instrument hoping to reap the rewards of recognition , sales , attendance for hard work and many hours of practicing, don`t make such a grand effort these days. The incentive is no longer there for them.

For those of them who do, they don`t get heard...they get discouraged from not getting noticed `cause there is no way to stand out from the multitude of other indie that`s also available, which most of it is not of high quality and most people just don`t have the time to audition through so much mediocre music in order to find something good....and on and on.

I do believe high quality new music will come back to the listener one day, and the musician will again be revered.
