Nice one! On a related note, this genre site is pretty comprehensive:

http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html

Documents roughly 1200 genres with links to example tracks.

The data must still be somewhat skewed, since it comes from Google Play Music. And it's not necessarily how popularity changed over time (it's easy to read it that way), but when the music that is popular now-ish came from.

(But really, how would one measure popularity accurately? Dollars earned, album sales, show tickets sold, radio plays etc. are all wildly inaccurate. Surveys would have to be ridiculously long and involved in order to pick up any information about smaller genres and subgenres -- and in many cases people don't know the "official" name(s) for the genres they like.)

(And it's always annoyed me that electronic music is so often thrown in with dance. There's plenty of electronic music aimed at art galleries, headphones and beard-stroking, there's video game music and all kinds of other stuff as well. I suppose "Dance/Electronic" is still better than "Dance & DJ" as a category though.)

Anyway, that timeline really highlights to me how unpopular the music I'm interested in really is, even though to me my tastes are diverse. Like a bunch of ultra-thin slices from different parts of a very thick cake.

Modern society / the internet really lets you live in a bubble. We've replaced our tribes of geography and ethnicity, for the most part, with tribes of subcultures. The tribe becomes the big, important part of one's world, everything else is just ignorant foreigners who don't know the lingo and don't appreciate your culture and believe all kinds of ridiculous and offensive things.
