Why no Joe Meek VSTs?

1) the Company "Joemeek" which was founded by Ted Fletcher and named after Joe Meek and which produces hardware devices for recording studios, is not affiliated with Joe Meek, the producer, at all.

Actually it was all Ted Fletcher's designs afaik - TF had been working for Joe Meek. Joe Meek was the first famous / highly successful user of some of Ted's devices, hence the company name, I think. Either way TF founded Joemeek in the 90's.

It's really not as clear-cut as that. Fletcher tends to leave out details in interviews that lead people to believe he was responsible for designs and those designs were behind the photoelectric compressor he sold under the JoeMeek brand. There is certainly a link between Meek's experiments and that compressor in terms of concept but I'm not sure it's any more than that.

Fletcher actually started as a backing singer for Meek's recording sessions – he went into audio engineering later. The point at which he switched to actual hardware manufacture (and possibly design) appears to be after Meek died and a little before founding Alice Mixer Co in 1969. As far as I can tell, the core design (at least conceptually) for the first JoeMeek-brand compressor came from Meek rather than Fletcher.

The guy behind the company that bought the JoeMeek line was somewhat less than complementary about Fletcher as I recall, although that may have be coloured by the way Fletcher sold very similar products under a new name after the rights deal completed.

Joe Meek certainly didnt need anyone else to design equipment for him; his knowledge of electronics was well-established before he moved into the recording industry.

Meek was born at 1 Market Square, Newent, Gloucestershire, and developed an interest in electronics and performance art at a very early age, filling his parents' garden shed with begged and borrowed electronic components, building circuits, radios and what is believed to be the region's first working television. A stint doing his national service in the Royal Air Force as a radar technician escalated his lifelong interest in electronics and outer space.
