I just got myself a nice 5-pack of plug-ins, check 'em out:

Alesis ModFX series

I wasn't going to buy more hardware this year, but when I was offered five of these babies for the measly sum of about $140 I just had to grab 'em. I got the flanger, the vocoder, the filter, the compressor and the tremolo/autopanner. Great fun for us geeks that won't quite let our hardware go yet...

Sorry if this should be in the off-topic board instead, just feeling happy and wanted to share. :)

Cheers,

Arne S.

wow. Actually, I'm really missing that hands-on vibe you get from hardware, so I'm glad you pointed these out.

I was looking at those a while back, how do they sound?

Well, try them out before you buy, if at all possible, as I didn't find all of them that interesting...

The filter is very decent indeed, if not exactly overly "aggressive" sounding, and the tremolo/autopanner is quite usable and fun too. The vocoder is better as a mangling unit than as a vocoder, as it lacks the clarity found in software plug-ins such as Akai's DC Vocoder or Vokator. I found the flanger to be the weakest sounding unit (for my uses, at leas) and the compressor is not very exiting compared to software plugs. It does squash drums in that Fatboy Slim fashion pretty well, though.

If you can only get one or two of them, check out the filter and the tremolo/autopanner first, as those are the best-sounding of those I've heard. I wanted to get the bitreducer one, but it wasn't part of the package, so...

Beware though, there's no MIDI here, so no proper synchronization of tempo and such. I look forward to trying them out in a live setting, though! :)

I'll post up some samples if there's interest.

Cheers,

Arne S.
