I'd try to re-search for the owners e-mail and ask him directly if it was him who wrote you an e-mail.
Do not wake up sleeping dogs,just ask him if he wrote you an e-mail.
Now,if you haven't made any money and already sold this artwork,if it's already gone too and not related to you anymore i would give a shit.
Maybe some scumbag is trying to rip you off.
After all,this guy needs to prove that you steal his picture.
It's always the best way to create everything by yourself (beside some legal bought products) even if this is the longer way to go.

+1 for trying to get it done by yourself in the first place.
If you really have to use work done by others, why not get approval beforehand? (have done that and it worked out well - mentioning sources and perhaps sending a free cd / download link / whatever can go a long way)
