Is U-he's copy protection crack proof?TheoM wrote:I will just say that i strongly believe in U-HE's method which he lets any dev use for free, so i always at least urge a dev to consider it. Cheers

I will buy it in any case, but there's no fundamental difference in the safety between serial,
C/R or a dongle.
The ilok is winning right now, but only by using security by obscurity, as the physical dongle does not
have much to do with it (unless it contains the dsp algorithms).
There's nothing stopping a serial (nor a C/R system) to be equally obscure, but you will need to spend a lot
of research to be as good as ilok.
C/R is a bit like being forced to watch the 'you wouldn't steal a dvd' advertisement at the start of the dvd you just purchased

... and a low pass filter boosts the highs, and a band pass filter boosts the frequencies below and above its range, and a notch filter boosts the frequency it is supposed to cut, and... I thought those names are descriptive for a reason. From now on I'm just going to use a compressor for all my filtering needs, thanks!andy-cytomic wrote:Using a high pass filter as a bass boost is one of the best production uses of The Drop, and one that I have recently given a demo of here: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/10418006-post956.html
... And what is the drop doing that other filters aren't doing? The Drop is doing what analog filters do since it solves circuits in great detail (apart from the hiss!).
EDIT: And, no, I don't want ANY subs on my hi-hats!

Only ilok 2 is crack proof so far.billcarroll wrote:Is U-he's copy protection crack proof?TheoM wrote:I will just say that i strongly believe in U-HE's method which he lets any dev use for free, so i always at least urge a dev to consider it. Cheers
I hear the only way to hand out pirate versions of u-he plugins to begin with is to use a stolen credit card. u-he plugins are supposed to melt on the screen if it's a pirated copy. I wish I could see that.
I'm not worried about Cytomic's future he's already become a legend with The Glue so if he went bust it would be some kind of sorcery involved. Andy is very welcome at Ableton as he's worked on two plugins with them so that's his safety net to keep making money and keep the server running.

I haven't followed at all, so forgive me, but I've seen ilok in here now a couple times - don't tell me Andy hit his head and is now requiring ilok?

No, he is considering using C/R.

I hope we can register offline. My music pc isn't connected to the net.

Okay. Thanks. I guess I'll go back a few pages and try to find the part why simple serial # registration doesn't work anymore.djanthonyw wrote:No, he is considering using C/P.
EDIT: Ah, okay. Just found Andy's post. Disappointing the need for change and additional complexity, but seems reasonable.

So for those of us with offline DAW setups, we won't be able to try Drop v1 on the 3rd after all?a new challenge response copy protection system that will be online activation only for a few weeks.
That's put a dampner on things
I hope I've interpreted that wrongly

A lot of C/R solutions have a offline registration method which works pretty good.manducator wrote:I hope we can register offline. My music pc isn't connected to the net.

Yes, the last line of defence is releasing a client run authorisation generator to all customers, no servers involved, no internet, just a program that generates an authorisation file that you can drag onto the interface to authorise the plugin. You just run it on your system hard drive, there is nothing even to enter. Just open a command prompt and run it. So you will always be able to authorise the software you have paid for.billcarroll wrote:
Not sure if you saw this part of Andy's post:
Unless I'm mistaken, this backup would not be dependent on a running auth server, so he's future proofing the system.... and with each build I also build a command line tool executable for both mac and win that generates authorisation files as a final backup, which in the event of any problems with the cytomic web page and online activations I can distribute to all customers.

That is right, you will have to wait a little longer since I want to roll this out gently.Rah wrote:So for those of us with offline DAW setups, we won't be able to try Drop v1 on the 3rd after all?a new challenge response copy protection system that will be online activation only for a few weeks.

Yes you will be able to very easily. The challenge code is like a regular serial number that (in the near future) will be able to type into the server where you previously typed in your registration information, then you can click "a download authorisation" button, which will download a .txt file that you copy (just like you did with the .zip of the plugin) to your music machine, then drag that onto the user interface to authorize. The whole process is similar to how you currently install a Cytomic plugin, but instead of dragging the plugin file to the plugin folder, you drag the auth file onto the gui of the plugin.manducator wrote:I hope we can register offline. I haven't had complaints from people about the current install process for machines not connected to the internet, and since the offline authorisation process is pretty much identical I don't expect any complaints about being able to do this process either.
