zerocrossing wrote:(copied and pasted from a thread I started when I didn't see this one)

First off, I wanted to say BRAVO! I had little expectations of this instrument thanks to the hush-hush nature (thanks Melda!) but it does deserve some hype, so I'm a hype'n. I don't even know how to quite describe it. Kind of a hybrid additive/VA but that really doesn't do it justice. With what you can do with waveshaping to the basic analog style waveforms it almost starts feeling like a wavetable kind of synth, though it's not quite that. The sound quality is very good and it seems light on the CPU for what it's offering.

The OSCs sound very nice, clear and lively or crazy or as basic as you want and of course it does additive OSCS.

The filter selection is mind boggling. Is there another synth with this many filter types? The distortion on the filters is probably the best I've heard in a plug in bar none. There are two filters. I'm not sure if you can run them in parallel as well as the default which is series.

The LFO and modulation system is very extensive, but it's going to take some more time and probably a crack of the manual to get it all. It's very extensive and flexible. The downside is just trying to do a basic aftertouch assign is a bit byzantine, but I guess that's the price for the flexibility.

Envelopes are extensive and very good.

The UI is overall pretty good if you choose the futuristic skin, other skins seem ugly as hell. It's all scaleable. I wish it had more drag and drop style of mod assignments. A lot of things don't seem intuitive at all, but this is the type of synth you sit down and read the manual to learn.

The effects sound great, but that's another area that I'm going to have to hit the manual to grok. I had a hard time figuring out how to add them in an empty preset.

Anyway, just a mini-review of my first impression with an hour with this synth. I must admit the name is dumb, but this is a must buy for sure.
Thank you!!!

Btw. the new version has better velocity/note/aftertouch tracking in filters, simple as possible ;).

To add an effect - just click on an empty slot ;). But I mainly randomize :).

And the name is, well, you saw the discussion... :D Some time ago you came up with MTurbo, and indeed it may was better than this :D, but people decided... so... MPowerSynth, I kind of like it now :D.

zerocrossing wrote:Mmmm morphing filters! If you implemented a E-MU style z-plane filter morphing set up many people would be very, very happy. (not that I'm not happy now)

:)
Not sure, if it's similar to E-MU style (whatever it is :D ), but it indeed morphs between LP/BP/HP and BP/Notch.

Then that's something different :).

Also check out u-he Filterscape which was inspired by z-plane filters... Not 100% identical, but just inspired. :)

Hm, maybe I came across a bug then? Just clicking on an empty slot didn't seem to do anything. (I'll check again later)

MTurbo, me? No. Must have been someone else. I think I thought of MModulator/MModulous but now that I've actually met the synth to be named it's clear the right answer is Mpartial. 8)

Ok, please try then. I'm pretty sure this should work as expected.

MTurbo is really your invention! :D It was some time ago, we were talking about MDrummer I think and you said something like "you should have named it MTurbo, it would be more famous..." :D And I though, yeah, that's so crazy, I need to try :D

Sure, I get that but I'm actually pretty surprised an accomplished synth designer such as yourself isn't at least somewhat familiar with the z-plane filters E-MU used in it's hardware and later software, samplers and ROMplers. They were super popular, at least here in the USA. To my knowledge, there's no software synthesizer that has anything like it. Not that you need much of a differentiator from the pack, but if you could implement something like z-plane filters in MPowerSynth (I'm sure it's a v2 type of addition) it would put even more distance between it and the competition. Maybe I'm selling it hard because I have a soft spot for those old E-MU ROMplers.

I didn't even vote for MTurbo! :help: I did a site search and nothing came up but links where I commented on the poll. Maybe in private I said it, but jokingly.

I used to always joke about computers with "turbo" buttons and ask salespeople if the CPU fed the exhaust back into the combustion chamber for the extra power, or when I sold consumer electronics I'd jokingly say about a boombox that had "turbo boost bass" or some similar similar marketing B.S. (very popular in the 90s) "Oh yes, there's a turbine in there to increase the acceleration of the woofers."

Be careful of my posts. I'm often very sarcastic. :clown:

BTW: which of the Melda threads should we use for bug reports? I get this when I try to "Replace" a preset:

[BIG RED EXCLAMATION MARK IN TRIANGLE] "Could not find required attribute (info)."

No problem saving as a new preset with a different name.

Though a lot of people are raving about zerocrossing's "MTurbo" name, surely it must be your invention, congratulation! :D

Although it reminds me (a little bit) of DubTurbo but to each his own. :hihi:

Solved a few hours after the release - please just download the new installer (same version name). Sorry about that, a bug that leaked...

First of all he seems to be a drummer and a mathematician. That's a suspicious combo if you know what I mean... :D
