*Awesome*, never seen one of those before! :tu:

And looks like this was also part of, or derived from the sampling part of Cosmo:

"After two years of development time with Casio released then the computer music system Cosmo ZZ-1 before at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. The project was primarily co-developed with Isao Tomita and Uhiru Takahashi of Yellow Magic Orchestra: A music system that on our own PD (Phase Distortion) synthesis (which also came in the CZ synthesizers used) and sampling-based 12-bit / linear PCM sampling with 40khz sampling rate, a total of 3 seconds sampling time, a programmable effect unit (delay, reverb & chorus), PC interface for Sampleediting- and transfer as well as a 3.5 "floppy drive. It consisted of a FP-6000 computer, a MIDI interface and the designated level with COSMO tone that also (albeit rudimentary) sampling allowed in addition to the PD-synthesis addition. Tomita took advantage of the system is still up in the 90s on various albums for the first time he used it on the Album 'Dawn Chorus'. "

thanks for the links. Checking out some Japanese synthesists! I wonder where the original Cosmo used by tomita is nowadays?

Kitaro and Yanni are also players of Casio synths since the mid-80's.

Especially Yanni, who is sometimes called a "Grand Master" of the Casio stuff. And in the 80s and 90s he used in many, many songs the CZ-3000 and the CZ-1, on stage as well as in studio.

Kitaro is much more a master user of Korg, but his keyboardists use often the Casio keyboards, and the CZ synths were used for many pads in his ten first albums (Silk Road and the 9 followings).

Each time you listen to Yanni not sat at a piano there is a good probability that he plays a Casio synth. I have pictures of concerts where I was in the 80s where he was playing CZ synths.

I always remember this outing for the CZ5000 on Top of the Pops*:

1:30 for the the closeup...
Sounds like it's the instrument doing that part on the record too, the CZ does good synth brass stabs (there's also DX7 on there, particularly *that* electric piano patch..)

*Come on, anyone of my age into synths could name the entire keyboard rig of any act on TOTP from the tiniest glance at the shape of the synth side panels alone...

...no? just me, then... :dog: :hyper:

And of course, who could forget Salt n Pepa's "Push It"? (though I've tried to - really really hard). CZ-101 all the way... (and in the video - that guy is well cool!)

"Spindarella Phase Distort me up one time!" was nearly a lyric - probably... :clown:

The William Salmela Project: Synthetic (Digital), Cosmo Synth
All sounds are from a Casio CZ-3000 synthesizer. Additional effects were used.

Except the drums, everything comes from the CZ-101 with very few effects behind. For the record... its price was exactly half the price of a DX7!

Here too, everything comes from the synth.

And here in the two songs which are in this video, everything comes from the CZ-1000 shown:

For those who as me like the very very long atmospheric and relaxing pads, listen to these two tracks which are made 100% with a CZ-3000:

The first track runs for 18 minutes and the second track for 56 minutes, but they are absolutely not boring if you like the relaxing pads.

Awesome! An extraordinary demonstration of a totally different music that can be made with the Casio CZ-series.

I can't see any MIDI learn in VirtualCZ. Is it scheduled?

Does that also count for parameter automation?

Do someone remember "The invincible Spirit (Limit)" ?
He produced his album "current News" completly with a cz5000. His hit "push" was cz5000 too. This was mainly made with presetsounds ! cool
and forced me 1988 to buy a cz5000

Niklashe wrote:I bought the VirtualCZ Plug-in as soon as it was released! Been waiting for something like this for a long time since I have owned a CZ-1000 since the 80s. Now when I have had time to compare them I can only say that it sounds fine indeed, some sounds are very similar to the original, especially the plucked sounds, brass and string ensemble sounds. So it is a fine start, almost fantastic, but there are still some room for improvements:)

On my CZ-1000, the envelopes are more snappy, faster and you can get some some hard hitting transients. Also the ring modulator needs some attention. There is a roughness in the original thats not quite there yet in the emulation, but its close. Also the sound is a tiny bit thinner which makes for example the violin and the trumpet (from the presets) sound a bit thin and lacks the fullness of the original. The CZ-1000 is fantastic at creating rough, hard synth bases, with some kind of surging bottom that the emulation is lacking, but it still has the right character so I have full faith it will get there in the future.

Still, as I said, some sounds really sounds amazingly convincing.

Nice work, looking forward on how it will develop:)
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you and I have plans to hone the emulation a bit for a future version to improve the punchiness of the bass sounds using the MSEG envs WRT to the original.

personally i prefer using the host to map MIDI CCs to parameters, but I might add built in MIDI learn for convenience.
