Zebra being a Workhorse of course, you got no sense of humour? :P
Sure, but I didn't get the humour here :tu:

And looking at all the plaudits and fans Zebra has got over the years, we can indeed say that it has earned its stripes :D

Simon, what's your top synths so far this year?

I didn't buy any synths since Spectral last year because none of the releases were of any interest to me, so this year's synth of the year for is definitely Serum, I find it extremely inspiring and the sounds coming out of it are special, it's the next step in wavetable synthesis.

Ok, thanks!

I'm an owner of Zebra2. I wonder what other owners of Zebra2 think of this new release. Can it do all of the things that Zebra can? What can't it do that Zebra can? Lots of talk about "anti-aliasing" in there - does Zebra hold up?

I know that there are a lot more "intelligent" people than me out there, so I'm curious to hear your opinions..

Now that I have had some time to work with both, I would have to say they are both great and sound very different.

I understand the comparison, but really its an intellectual one, not a sonic one.

Each one has its unique strengths.

I own Zebra2 and really enjoy using it for quick sound design, but if i felt like resampling some of my other synthesizers, could do this very easily with serum. I'm not too concerned about the filter quality since i could use something like Cytomics The Drop right after it.
Sure, but then you only have a single filter which is very different than a filter per voice.
Andrew Simper provided the DSP for Serum's filters according to its About page

The filter DSP is not by Cytomic.
What about this then?

This is an unauthorized use of the Cytomic logo that Steve will fix quickly, there is no Cytomic code in Serum.

...and? This was discussed in detail in the same thread and clarified by Steve and Andy.

... and I'm sure not everyone is going to read the whole thread and just see it in this thread thinking that it's similar code to The Drop for the filter, when it surely is not.

This is the first case of domestication of the species. A new subgenus: Hippotigris Sonus.

serum has the quailty but I find it eats up cpu soo massively. I have a i4700k i7 system and im still getting it between 12-36 % while playing midi keys. I can feel the quality and the options but the cpu eating is iffy id have to resample everything.

If you will allow a metaphor:
If Zebra 2 is the world, then Serum is one of the five continents; very beautiful, very interesting and rewarding to visit and frequent, but nevertheless a portion of the ‘whole’. A beautifully executed portion , but still a portion. Yes it can do FM and additive as can Zebra2 but Zebra’s routing, modular architecture , modulation and analog options are vastly wider.
Serum is an exposition of a genre of synthesis (wavetable) rather than the behemoth modular thing that Zebra is. It is gorgeous but it’s nothing like as deep as Zebra2.
One is not better than the other, they’re just different. It’s like comparing candy with vegetables; each has their role in our diets, some people have a sweet tooth some are ‘healthy’ vegetarians.
