hello all,

i have just installed a new motherboard and everything seems to be running fine.
the board is an Asus A7V8X and i am running an Athlon AMD 2 GIG chip.

BUT the chip is only running at 1.25 gig.
when i go into the bios and try and change this to run at 2gig i am informed that i have to change the jumper on the motherboard.

SO i've downloaded the manual for the motherboard and i think i,ve found the relevent info, but im not sure.

Vcore over-voltage (3-pin OVER_VOLT1)
When enabled, this jumper allows CPU Vcore ranges of 1.7V to 2.05V.
When this jumper is disabled, Vcore setting has a range of +1.5V to
+1.85V.
You may adjust the CPU Vcore through the BIOS set up.

Warning: Setting to a very high core voltage may cause permanent damage to the CPU. It is recommended that you keep the default setting
(Disable)

ok is this the info i need?
any help is really appreciated

What athlon do you have? Is it a "thoroughbred" XP2000+?

AMD cpus always run slower than the alleged speed.
That´s because AMD uses magic to overclock their cpus without really overclocking them
That´s why they´re so hot when running.

If you don't know exactly what cpu (and core) you have. Go here http://www.sisoftware.net/ and d/l the free version of Sisoft Sandra.

you need to adjust the fsb jumpers to 133 or 166 (probably the latter anything over athlon 2500+ is 166)

ok, so i moved the jumper, and it had no effect. we set it to 1600 and it crashed as windows opened.
with the jumper in the new position it will still boot up at 1250.
so we took the chip out and put it back in again and powered up again with the jumper in the new position, and BINGO.
the pc is now running at 1650.
you only get one go at changing the CPU if we want to change it again we need to take the chip out and do it again.
the only thing stopping us from going to 2000+ is a RAM speed of 333.

Once again, as nuffink asked, what processor are you actually using?

You say its 'an Athlon AMD 2 GIG chip' but does that mean its an XP2000? If so, then it is not capable of running at 2Ghz. It runs at a core speed of... 1650Hz. If you've got an XP2000 and you try to run it at 2000Hz, you'll be overclocking your chip, and you may fry it! And BTW the XP2000 only supports 266 RAM, so thats not the only thing stopping you from going '2000+' if thats what you have.

Meanwhile, the only 32-bit Athlons which has a core 2Ghz speed are the Thoroughbred XP2400's. A couple of other models have core speeds close to 2Ghz, including the Barton XP2800.

So can you tell us exactly what it is? Because AMDs processor numbers do not relate to their actual speed, and you may damage your system...

thanks for the info guys. the chip is a 2000XP, so it looks like i will be staying at 1650Mhz. this must be the speed it was running at on the old MoBo.

i have downloaded the sandra program and i will give it a whirl tonight.
