Delusions of morality are a bitch..

It's easy to say take the money & run I guess, but I completely understand about bearing weight on your concience. When I get a client that wants an inapproriate tattoo done, I explain why I won't do it & they usually think I'm a cock cause now I'm f**king with thier instant gratification thing, so they leave the studio with me knowing full well they're going down the street & someone else will glady get paid to not give a f**k. Happens almost every day for me. I get irritated I couldn't persuade them to something else & I regret losing money, but they never wind up in my photo album if you know what I mean.

Anyways, I somewhat agree on your viewpoint regarding "nature".

However, we need to ask ourselves every now and then about the healthyness of our actions.
As it looks right now, we will erase ourselves from the planet more or less soon (well, at least a great portion of us will be erased somehow). And while you may call this "natural" (and while I may even agree...), it still raises the question whether looking for other (quite possible) alternatives wouldn't be a better idea...

sh@ne, your idea is well written & all, but implying that athiests do not have morality is plain wrong. One does not require a belief in a higher power to accede to a moral existance.

I can tell you that I am athiestic to the point of nihilism, but even if I believed the world was a hallucination in my head, exterminating things with impunity is still uncalled for.

It isn't neccessary to follow god to have a desire for things of beauty to remain on earth. Nor to respect what's here or even other ppl's opinions.

I have to say John, Hip Hip Horay for being true to your beliefs. Too many people sell their soul for money that have f**ked everything up for the rest of us. I recently got one of my tunes in a commercial (for a non profit Org) and was paid if it was for a for profit gig like the one youi were offered I would have to say no also. I have to draw the line somewheres, no Macdonalds burger commercials for me.

I think the Shane Sanders labels of atheist and agnostic aren't especially useful. One can have a moral and ethical sense without a belief in God.
One can believe one has a connection to all the other life forms and non-life forms without believing there is a supreme life form. And as such one can have a belief in better forms/ways of life without necesarily believing there is a supreme form/way of life.

most people don't do good out of fear of supreme and and possibly everlasting punishment for doing bad.
at least I'd like to think so

as difficult a decision it might have been, i find it encouraging (in every sense) that decisions like this are made.

I didn't say atheist don't have morality or moral inclinations, in fact, I pointed out that two self-professed atheist seem to adhere to a moral code. What I said was the worldview itself implodes because it fundamentally dismisses the grounding necessary to claim a "true" moral stance. There's a distinction there. Yes?

Yes and our extinction and the extinction of those we take with us (even if that includes all other life) will be just another chapter in the history of nature.
Life or the lack of life? Either way there is no point to anything. I mean that fundamentally. I have an instinct for survival but I know that ultimately my (and your) life is futile. If your life makes others happy there is still no point as they are due to die as well. In my view there is no higher power and no afterlife. All religion is a way of us being able to deny our greatest fear: Death and all its finality. If I die and wake up in some kind of heaven or hell I'll be delighted that I got it wrong! But, as the card carrying existentialist that I am, I will expect nothing.

if i didn't believe in anything other than me and a material universe, i could still say:

good: what is good for me
bad: what is bad for me

now the question remains: how do i know what is good or bad for me?

i'd have to think, which is a good thing.

sure, that's more demanding than following precepts and rules, but that's more interesting, too.

is that a true moral law from a christian point of view? i guess no.

but that's a real moral law, anyway.
