Does anyone know anyone in the UK who supplies PC Laptops (ideally Centrino) which have one, ideally two 6-Pin Firewire ports. I want a laptop with the 6-Pin ports for two main reasons:
1) Some external soundcards (e.g. M-Audio Firewire Audiophile) can be powered through a 6-Pin, but not a 4-Pin Firewire Port (in that case you'd need an external power source)
2) The 4-pin connector seems very fragile, and I'm worried about the cable getting knocked out when playing live. The 6-Pin connector seems more secure

Actually, a solution may be to get a Firewire Cardbus PC Card, there's one here with two 6-pin Firewire connectors for 49 Euro's

that´s why i want to change my m-audio firewire410 for a pcmcia card,
but that´s another cuestion.
i think, for to get what i want, i have to build it myself....

The reason you won't find 6 pin Firewire connection to laptops, is from a single reason that laptop power supply will not have the required power to run audio devices, even if you will find this port on the laptop.
The 6 pin connection of the firewire protocol is indeed for power supply for the external device, but since laptop run at specific voltage and power, are not designed and are quite limited for running up other devices (the same issue with USB 1.1 and 2.0).
In that case you will have to carry the external power supply of the device.

Sukram, are you having problems with the 410 because of the 4-pin? That was my suspicion, as I sent it back a few days later. And still havent heard from M-audio about ym questions (of course that was last August funny, now a few days later I get a response on UC33 issues)
I wonder about the 4-pin dealy cuz I want to get an Edirol FA-101, maybe I'll go the PCMCIA route, and take out the Indigo when necassary

I would go for one the Echo Indigo PCMCIA cards but I want two stereo outs (like the Echo DJ) but also one stereo in (like the Echo I/0), but it seems you can only get one or the otherSukram wrote:have the same problem,

**my m-audio firewire410 works with a acer laptop (4pin connection)and external power ,souns is not bad, but it´s so a fragil connection, really not made for professional work...
**i want to go with indigo i/o (for mobility), but my pcmcia port is just close to the usb and firewire-ports, so -as the indigo has lateral minijack connectors- i´ll have other problems (no more access to the nearby f-wire, usb ports)...¿?¿?¡¡!!

yep yep...macs do power external firewire harddrives as well as devices, it's the only thing that macs have over pcs, the pc lappys with 6pin connections do not power devices, and even the pcmcia card firewire adapters do not power any devices, what a fuddin shame, but this encourages me to have a hybridSukram wrote:macs do, i checked this out !!!!!!!!!!
