Baaba Maal's background-singer, I don't know her name.
She did a solo during a Baaba Maal gig and I had no idea what the hell she was singing about.
The first few notes and I had tears in my eyes.
What a voice. Raw, pure. Nothing I'd ever heard before (or have since). Didn't send shivers down my spine but down my soul.

Elvis? First pop idol?

...surely you jest.
Just my opinion though, lets not quibble
...but that's what internet forums are for...quibbling!

Yes, I know (re quibble) however, you have missed the irony there Sleek. Whilst not being a particular fan of Elvis myself, I rate his voice and choice of songs extrememly high. The point I was making was that in certain circles, mass acceptance = zero credibility. IE - It can be seen as 'cool' to drag artists from pedestals. Therefore, whilst there may be a truism somewhere in Elvis being the first pop idol, (He was certainly the first pop star) I felt the need to reiterate the substance that earned the guy his 'king' title.

Well, everything else is just opinion, but elvis was far from the first pop star or idol, even of the modern age. (Say from the implementation of the electronic microphone on up.)

There were plenty of guys who had enormous appeal in the same demographic as Elvis did later...and the same sort of:"What's with these kids going crazy" hysteria-thing.

One you may have heard of was Frank Sinatra. Long before his success as a mature artist in the late '50's, he was a teen (his audience, not him...)sensation in the '40's.

It's funny shit, that whole "bobbysoxer" era. Well worth googling for a laugh.

I'm the complete opposite there. I think the male voice is ugly. I dont know why. Maybe for the same reason i dont appreciate massages from males i guess.

Most my favorite singings are on trance tracks, my favs being:
Freefall - Skydive
Ascencion - Someone
DJ Tiesto - Silence (feat. Sarah M.) (despite the horribly cheesey synth leads that follow. He kinda ruined it there, but I still love the vocals)

Kurt Cobain, specifically on the Nirvana Unplugged CD.
Thom Yorke, on the 2,3,4 and 5th Radiohead albums, then he just started to sound whiney for the sake of it.
Bono - all the time.
