one of the most moving moment of music i can remember has been:

Llorando (Crying) sung by Rebekah Del Rio in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.

i haven't recovered yet...

So many singers / songs / tunes have this effect on me, but when I read this question one voice always springs immediately to mind, and one song in particular...

Janis Joplin.
Ball And Chain.

Aye, Glassback, Janis was exceptional... I think only Cobain came close in the ability to convey mischief.

Tracy Chapman is my personal heart-mover, her incredible songs and melancholic voice always make me moody.

Tori Amos and Kate Bush tend to deliver as well.

Vesa-Matti Loiri, David Sylvian and Leonard Cohen are strong men, and a young newcomer Ville Leinonen might just become one of the greatest singer-songwriters... much said but I'm thoroughly impressed with his skills. And Jeff Buckley naturally deserves a mention here as well.

Stevie Ray Vaughn,,, Life With Out You,,from Soul To Soul,,,
And theres a story,,
I got to see him about a year or so before he died and he played the Hamersmith Odean,, when it came to the part of the show were he played this song he took it down about half way through and did this whole rap about going through recovery and so on,, he also went on to say that that night marked the anniversary of when he had his collapse and also the passing of Charlie Wirz, for whom the song was written,, cool,,
So a year or so later and i'm living in Australia and i get a call from a friend say's that i have to turn the radio on as SRV has been killed and blah-blah-blah,,so i turn the radio on and the DJ is talking about SRV and he then plays House is rockin,, Love struck baby,, and Voodoo child and then closes with Life with Out You,, man i was a fuckin wreak,, my boss had to give me a beer and then gave me the rest of the day off,,
Stevie was one of those guy's that could sing the Phone book and make it sound good,, and he did it equally as well as playing his guitar ,,

hell yeah! also 'blood', so low key.

Bob Mould - Particularly his early solo stuff, his Husker Du stuff was awesome in a cathartic overload way (eg. '59 times the pain') but tracks like 'Last Night' from Black Sheets of Rain just floor me everytime.

Mark Eitzel! - no ones mentioned him! His American Music Club stuff ('Jenny', 'Blue & Gray Shirt', 'Kathleen'...)is just peerless... even he cries when he sings it (tragic-funny live, keeps apologising for losing the plot.)

Michael Stipe - Yeah, give him space and he'll deliver a cracking vocal ('country feedback', 'fearless', 'low', 'witchita lineman')

Alan Sparhawk & Mimi Parker - Low - can't seperate them, just a classy double act. Their 'duetting' on stuff like 'sea', 'starifre' and 'sunshine' is really haunting. Solo they sometimes better it, Alan on 'Don't Understand' when he hits that falsetto thing he does; Mimi on things like 'Two Step' and 'Weight of water'

Kristin Hersh - unconventional I guess but so good.

new discovery: Julie Doiron - ex of Erics Trip, purveyor of heartbreaking minimal...folk i guess.
