Are you the same polac who wrote the vst loader in Buzz?
I gave up on Buzz a long time ago but it is good to see the developement starting again. I hope someting great will come out of it.

MuLab, for modularity, has no competition, period!
Active and amazing developer.
A real DAW to begin with, and completely based on a modular engine.
Beside being equipped with first class synths, effects, sampler, drum module etc. you can even built any of those, and more tools, out of the box within the program by accessing the modular area or loading the (mighty) MUX which comes included in the DAW, same as the one you can also buy as a VST for usage in other DAWs as well.

A powerhouse indeed!

I discovered Buzz just a month or so ago and for a few days I was thinking the same as what you wrote but then I found out that if a machine is replaced or deleted in Buzz then the (midi) pattern for that machine also gets deleted.

I then thought "aarrghh, that won't do, goodbye Buzz, it's been nice knowing you". Farewell was not so hard because Buzz had a link to Buzze (a Buzz clone which has a way of keeping the midi pattern intact when its machine is deleted or replaced, does Buzz have a way too?).

Still, nothing compares to Buzz in terms of being truly free. Buzz is not a demo with limitations like all the alternatives seems to be (excepting Buzz clones but aren't all the alternatives really just altered improved clones of Buzz anyways?). Plus, Buzz has over a thousand downloadable songs that can be easily examined.

um, reason.
I use both, as you know, You can actually load Reason (rewire) into the modular environment of MuLab and use it as a VST inside a MUX and build a new Synth with it, like a super-combinator, while it can not be done the other way around.

You can nest as many MUX (combinators if you will) as you like but you CAN'T do that in Reason.

Also, you may need to dig MuLab 6 in order to really get it.
Not as a day playground but as a deep tool to be discovered.
Reason?..... Not enough reasons

The core of Mulab is MUX, and you can use MUX as a VST in whatever DAW you prefer. It is really awesome, fun, and completely underrated.

Don't give up too fast :)

Replacing option works like creating new plugin in old place.
If we are talking about vst wrapper, you can load there another plugin, without losing anything from pattern.
Under right click menu, on the bottom you can see special options for selected plugin, vst wrapper has a couple. You can load there vst from hard drive by 'Open' for example, or choose plugin from the list.
In native plugins it's a little bit more complicated. There are a few options..., it's possible to export pattern to midi and import it in another generator for example.

Usine Hollyhock, hands down.

Though the color scheme may not be my favorite, the vector graphics make this the nicest looking patch interface available. Colors are a known weak point, which they have promised to address in the next version. Compared to AudioMulch or Bidule, I don't think we are even in comparable aesthetic leagues (though it is always a matter of taste, and the actual patching window of Bidule is nice to look at).

Speaking of the next version, it should be coming out pretty soon now. They are pretty tight lipped about future plans, but have been dropping hints about the next version more frequently recently. I assume they are quiet about roadmaps and such because the size of their team is so small, they don't want to announce a feature and then be forced to drop it due to time constraints. That's my take anyway.

It also just fits in at just the right complexity level. Compared to something like Reaktor, you should find processing MIDI to be a dream. It doesn't have as much low level synthesis stuff as Reaktor does, but for building sequencers, custom modulations, interfaces, and complex routings, it's very versatile.

As with all these projects, though, the community is pretty small and the amount of documentation is always a bit lacking. However I've found the Sensomusic forums to be quite helpful.

Also, Usine is multi touch friendly and great for creating custom interfaces
