Any bands similar to Tool?

You wouldn't be the first. Keep in mind, no vocalist will ever come close to Maynard in what he does. I look for instrumental style that resembles Tool and then hope the vocals can be worthy or as original in their own right.

Quicksand
These guys without a doubt. They started out about the same time Tool released their first album too but they never really got promotion and recognition and stayed in the underground hardcore scene.





Failure (toured with Tool in mid 90s, and Troy Van Leeuwen plays guitar with APC). Perfect Circle even covered their "The Nurse Who Loved Me". One of the most under rated bands of 90's

This band called " Pete."that really never got noticed, they are bit like Chevelle, but also remind me a bit of Tool, but too nu metal. The singing is there.

The Mars Volta, although I really never got much into them. I much prefer At The Drive In.

Love this album though. Very experimental yet melodic and listenable, dark trippy, dynamic from soft slow to fast, although lacking on the long compositions, but still technical. I wish it was longer too.

I like Tool a lot too, and there is this band, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, that reminds me of them in some aspects:

It is different, of course, absolutely not a copy, but they have a really fine songwriting, fun time signatures, etc etc. Just a totaly different band, and an excellent one. One of the best concert I ever saw (I don't say that every tuesday or so).

Great suggestion, I have seen Sleepytime Gorilla Museum many times here in the SF Bay Area. Really a unique perspective with the odd time signatures, self-built instruments, and virtuoso violinist Carla Kihlstedt. Nils and Dan (SGM bassist & guitarist) were also in Idiot Flesh and now have a group called Free Salamander Exhibit.

I'd also recommend Neurosis, they definitely have their own brand of cinematic, progressive, moody heavy music.

Maybe Primus?

I was going to say Primus too... and Crimson. Mmmm King Crimson. Especially in their Track era, very prog metal. Seems like Fripp is getting more and more angry as he gets on.

Check these guys one, they're from my hometown, Jeff the guitarist works in my local music store. I don't know if they're very "similar to Tool", but Tool are fans of theirs, Jacob tour with Tool sometimes and open for them when they play in New Zealand.
