This is basically what my original question was. Have I actually created something that someone deems worthy of pirating. My music has sold in the past, not by the bucketload, just slowly and surely. Now, within days of a new release, it has been pirated, with two mixes that I don't believe have been made available to listen for free in their entirety. Unless there is a bot that can rip directly from Spotify, where they can be streamed for free - and, if that technology exists, the track I released a month ago wasn't deemed worthy enough, as I can't find that available on the same download sites.

Bluedad - I've just seen your link, and get the gist of the article. I'm not jumping up and down in anger at the piracy. Without wanting to sound big-headed, I'm strangely pleased. I'd actually considered releasing tracks through torrents in the past, just to get them out there, and there's still no guarantee that someone would be listening to them. I'm fortunate that I have a full-time job in a completely different industry, and I'm fully aware that it is much more serious problem for people who work purely in the music industry. I'm just happy with the thought that somewhere out there, people might hear one of my tracks in a club or on their computer.

One of the strangest things I've ever found about my music was a scandisk/chkdsk log of someone's harddrive where one of the corrupt files was the video for the first track that I ever put out, which they'd obviously ripped from YouTube. It tickled me that someone had either enjoyed the track or the video enough that they'd bothered to rip it to their harddrive, when they could simply view it as many times as they liked on YouTube for free...

It doesn't matter much, I am not selling it and they giving it away...but what are these sites? Does anyone know.

BTW, they are getting it from soundcloud because only songs I have posted on soundcloud are there...other songs that are on soundclick are not there.

edit: there was another site but when I clicked on it it was not there...as long as no one is making money off of my music I dont care

I think what some of you guys are talking about is not exactly piracy.

There are automated systems that scrape SC and BC every day, rip the streams, and post the rips onto dozens of 'sister sites' either for free streaming, or pennies to dl.
Thats not really piracy in the traditional sense.
That kind, unfortunately, I would not personally take as a compliment... There is no 'taste maker' pirate making any choices in the matter. Its literally an automated system.
One of my tracks once was getting tons of hits on one such site. I didnt even get plays on SC from it. I didnt even get the satisfaction of knowing why it was getting plays...

If your release gets pirated by a real Scene release group though, that is another story...
That is worth something.

If this particular track was available in all 3 mixes on Bandcamp or Soundcloud, I could understand it, but it isn't.

I post my tracks for free download on Soundcloud and notice that they are also appearing on illegal download sites too. I don't really care about it though, if more people are getting to hear my tunes then its all good, I'm not losing anything.

I would be pissed though if I found that someone had taken one of my tracks and put their name on it.....I'm hearing that is happening a lot these days.

I've found some of my tracks uploaded on YouTube. As someone said, I expect it to be some kind of bot doing this automatically.
Can't check illegal sites sites, but they're probably there too.

Yeah, there's a couple of my tunes too which were only ever available at my website.

Change your song name to something that contains often searched for "porn" words and your torrent downloads will explode

I have a couple of free tracks available (uploaded and seeded myself). And over time they got ten thousands of downloads, just one had within a short time couple of hundred thousands. Its name was "Tha Blow Job"

Realising that 99.99% were downloading in the hope for ... well let's say NOT MUSIC

Piracy can be a measurement for success. The more popular the song is, the more downloads you'll have. It usually doesn't help the artist at all. No one is going to give you gigs for real money, just because you have a lot of pirated downloads. Well, maybe, if you do the Gangnam Style and have 1 billion (real) views on Youtube, plus 500 million downloads and likes and such

Nowadays I believe putting too much energy into fighting piracy is wasted time. You cannot stop it. With luck you can use it, because it MIGHT increase attention to you.

Yeah, I wouldn't be flattered by the inclusion. You are a content provider, they need content, I would be surprised if they even listened to your song(s). The other day on bandcamp, someone sent me a nice email on how great they thought my songs were. I looked at my stats: no plays even remotely near that time and no downloads (even though it's free to do so.) I sense there is some app or something that allows them to take some song off one of my pages without triggering a download or play.

In other words, if you put a song up somewhere on the internet, it's going to wind up on one of these sites. Has nothing to do with its quality, I bet they would hijack a track with 5 minutes of dead air if you put one up. Sorry to burst your bubble.
